Newcomers may follow its central drama, yet viewers who know the series are better placed to catch its context. For existing fans, the film’s expanded action and fixed screen pacing may be exhilarating—or at odds with what they value in the manga.
Can you watch the Reze Arc movie without seeing season one?
Possibly, if you are willing to enter partway through a continuing story. Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc is a direct sequel to the TV anime, which aired from October to December 2022, and centers on Reze and Denji. Director Tatsuya Yoshihara described the arc as having a “clean beginning, development, twist, and conclusion.” The Associated Press also characterized the film as self-contained.
Those qualities give the movie a defined dramatic shape; they do not establish that every relationship, reference, or piece of background is explained for first-time viewers. The available reporting does not measure newcomer comprehension or show whether prior viewing is strictly necessary. If you want the clearest introduction to the characters and premise, watch the anime first. If you are comfortable picking up context as you go, the film’s central relationship may still provide a way in.
What might feel different to manga readers?
The adaptation has to translate a page that readers control into a film with fixed images, sound, and timing. Assistant director Makoto Nakazono said the team considered manga’s “sense of space between pictures” and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s dialogue while adapting that flow to video. He also noted that each reader perceives manga differently, whereas a film gives the audience a set sound and time flow.
#1 Best Overall
That difference can matter even when a film preserves the spirit of a scene. A reader can linger on a panel or move quickly through a sequence; a viewer receives the timing chosen for the screen. Fans especially attached to Fujimoto’s compositions, pauses, or dialogue rhythm may find the translation less satisfying than the page. That is a possible response to the medium, not evidence that fans broadly felt frustrated.
Why the action may feel bigger than the manga
Yoshihara and Nakazono describe a deliberate push toward theatrical scale: more dramatic action, widescreen imagery, sound, explosions, and typhoon visuals. The MANTANWEB interview says some of the Bomb action is not depicted in the manga. Viewers who want an action-forward cinema experience may welcome that expansion. Readers who prefer the manga’s exact visual economy may find it changes the balance of the material.

The film’s soundtrack is also part of its presentation. The official Chainsaw Man site identifies Kenshi Yonezu as the performer of the theme song “IRIS OUT” and the ending theme “JANE DOE”; its announcement documents a conversation between Yonezu and Fujimoto but does not provide a transcript of what they said.
What audience response does—and does not—tell us
The Associated Press reported an A CinemaScore and an estimated $17.25 million U.S. and Canadian opening weekend in October 2025, with the box-office estimate attributed to Comscore. The grade is a surveyed audience result, not a critics’ rating; the opening figure is for the United States and Canada, not a worldwide total. These results show a strong opening and positive audience response, but they do not tell us whether newcomers understood the story or whether fans were frustrated.

TheWrap likewise reported strong audience scores and described the crowd as fan-heavy. That offers context about the audience present, not a representative account of all fans or first-time viewers. Neither outlet establishes a general newcomer-versus-fan divide.
For a separate, dated measure of its Japanese theatrical run, ORICON reported on December 31, 2025 that the film had reached 10.01 billion yen and 6.558 million admissions in Japan after 103 days in theaters. Those figures describe that reported Japan-only milestone, not a current worldwide gross. ORICON also cited 30 million manga copies in circulation for the wider franchise; that is a manga circulation figure, not a count of moviegoers.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- New to the series: Consider it if the Reze-and-Denji story and large-scale action appeal to you, but expect to join an ongoing franchise rather than begin at its starting point.
- Anime viewers: The movie continues the TV story and gives the Reze arc a feature-length dramatic arc.
- Manga readers: Expect an adaptation shaped by film timing and expanded theatrical action, not a panel-for-panel substitute for reading.
For a direct comparison of paneling, dialogue, and pacing, read Fujimoto’s manga alongside the film. The production team’s comments about adaptation are in MANTANWEB’s English translation of an interview originally published in Japanese: part one and part two. The official announcement about the songs is on the Chainsaw Man site.
