The Horrific True Story Behind ‘Mississippi Burning’

The 1988 film draws on the 1964 murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, but its FBI-centered drama leaves out much of the movement and changes key details.

Mississippi Burning takes its name from the FBI’s codename for the investigation into the 1964 murders of civil-rights volunteers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. The historical record is more complex than the film’s FBI-centered drama: the men were killed after working alongside local people during Freedom Summer, the federal case produced conspiracy convictions—not murder convictions—and a state case convicted Edgar Ray Killen of manslaughter decades later.

What is the true story behind Mississippi Burning?

In June 1964, Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner were involved in Freedom Summer, an organized voter-registration effort led by civil-rights groups and local residents. The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported in 2014 that fewer than 7% of eligible African Americans in Mississippi were registered to vote. The campaign unfolded amid violent opposition to Black political participation.

The three men had returned from training in Ohio and traveled to Neshoba County to visit Mount Zion Church, which the Ku Klux Klan had burned. On June 21, Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price arrested them in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Chaney was charged with speeding; Goodman and Schwerner were held “for investigation.” After their release that night, they were followed and did not reach the church.

FBI agents found the men’s burned station wagon on June 23. On August 4, agents located Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner’s bodies buried beneath an earthen dam. The FBI’s institutional account says the charred vehicle led it to name the investigation “MIBURN,” for Mississippi Burning.

What happened in the court cases?

The FBI’s search involved the National Guard and efforts to develop informants and investigate the local Klan. The legal outcomes came in two different cases, and the distinction matters:

  • 1967 federal case: Eight defendants were convicted of conspiracy to violate federal civil-rights law. They were not convicted of murder in that federal case.
  • 2005 state case: Mississippi convicted Edgar Ray Killen of manslaughter.

The U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division’s case summary, updated May 10, 2018, states: “Nine individuals have been successfully prosecuted for these heinous crimes.” That total reflects prosecutions across the cases; it does not mean that the 1967 federal jury returned murder convictions.

How accurate is Mississippi Burning?

The 1988 film is based on the murders, but it is a fictionalized drama rather than a reliable reconstruction of the investigation. The American Historical Association’s 1989 review identified specific departures: the film places Chaney in the back seat although he had driven, and stages Schwerner’s murder in a car rather than in the woods. The review also argues that the film’s depiction of FBI agents abandoning legal methods stretches the truth. These are documented examples, not a complete scene-by-scene audit.

The larger difference is whose actions the story foregrounds. The film builds its drama around white FBI agents, while the historical movement depended on Black Mississippians and civil-rights organizers who worked for racial justice and voter access. Historians and critics have faulted the film for diminishing that agency even as it depicts racist violence against Black people. The American Film Institute’s catalog records contemporary objections to its portrayal of white men as heroes acting for African Americans.

That criticism does not erase the FBI investigation or the danger faced by its personnel. It does mean the film’s heroic framing should not be mistaken for a full account of how Freedom Summer, local organizing, investigative work, and later prosecutions fit together.

Where can you find records about the case?

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History makes records from the state attorney general’s 2004 reopening of the case available to researchers. That investigation culminated in Killen’s 2005 conviction. The files offer a route into state records beyond the film and institutional summaries.
