The Eternaut is a six-episode Argentine science-fiction series on Netflix, released globally on April 30, 2025. It adapts Héctor G. Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López’s influential graphic novel, placing a deadly snowfall and an alien invasion in Buenos Aires. Its story of people surviving together sits alongside a significant Argentine cultural history—but the series is fiction, not a documentary.

What is The Eternaut about?

A deadly snowfall blankets Buenos Aires, and contact with the flakes proves fatal. Juan Salvo and other survivors try to stay alive, then discover that the snow is the first attack in an alien invasion. Netflix’s synopsis makes the central survival idea explicit: “The only way to stay alive is to join together and fight. No one will survive on their own.”

The premise moves from an ordinary neighborhood facing an unexplained disaster to a wider struggle for survival. The group’s reliance on one another is part of the story’s substance, not just a practical response to the danger.

When was The Eternaut released, and how many episodes are there?

The first season premiered globally on Netflix on April 30, 2025, and contains six episodes. Netflix identifies Bruno Stagnaro as the series’ creator and director; he co-wrote it with Ariel Staltari. Netflix’s season announcement provides the release and production details.

Who is in the cast?

Ricardo Darín plays Juan Salvo. The cast announced by Netflix also includes:

  • Carla Peterson
  • César Troncoso
  • Andrea Pietra
  • Ariel Staltari
  • Marcelo Subiotto
  • Claudio Martínez Bel
  • Orianna Cárdenas
  • Mora Fisz

Is The Eternaut based on a book?

Yes. The series is the first screen adaptation of the Argentine graphic novel by writer Héctor G. Oesterheld and artist Francisco Solano López. Netflix dates its first publication to 1957; Netflix Tudum says it appeared in installments from 1957 to 1959 and was collected in one volume in 2015. Netflix Tudum’s series guide includes adaptation and publication details.

The graphic novel offers a direct companion to the series, but the two forms tell the story differently: a comic unfolds through drawn panels, while a six-episode television season develops its characters and events over screen time. The adaptation also brings the story to a contemporary audience while retaining Buenos Aires as its setting. Those differences make the comic a useful next read for viewers interested in how the story began, rather than a substitute for the series.

For English-language readers, Fantagraphics lists a 368-page, black-and-white hardcover edition, ISBN 9781606998502. Its publisher page identifies the book as the winner of the 2016 Eisner Award for Best Archival Collection/Project—Strips. See Fantagraphics’ edition page for the book’s listed details.

Where is the story set, and where was the series filmed?

The story is set in Buenos Aires, and the production was filmed in the city. Netflix’s January 2025 announcement says filming ran from May to December 2023, used more than 35 real locations and more than 25 virtual-production stages, and was made with K&S Films. A later Netflix production-impact announcement gives a broader set of figures: 148 shooting days in Buenos Aires, more than 50 locations and 35 virtual sets. These are Netflix-published production counts, and the difference in location totals reflects the figures in its separate announcements.

Why does the graphic novel carry historical weight in Argentina?

Oesterheld and his four daughters were disappeared during Argentina’s military dictatorship. The family’s history gives the work a grave cultural context, and the series renewed public attention to their story and the search for missing grandchildren, as The Associated Press reported in May 2025.

That history should not be reduced to a claim that the science-fiction series is a documentary or a simple one-to-one allegory. The survival-together premise can support political readings, but interpretations are not the same as an established statement of authorial intent. AP also reported that the series’ motto was used in Argentine protests in 2025. Martín Oesterheld, the writer’s grandson and a creative consultant and executive producer on the show, described its reception as a cultural and social event that brought his family pride.

How was the series produced in Argentina?

Netflix says the production began in Argentina in 2019 and involved 2,900 people, including cast and extras. In a May 6, 2025 announcement, the company estimated that the production contributed more than 41 billion Argentine pesos to the country’s economy, counting direct production spending and supply-chain effects. That is Netflix’s estimate, not an independently presented economic assessment. The company also reported that the series drew 10.8 million worldwide views in its premiere week, debuted at No. 1 on its global Top 10 for non-English-language series, and appeared in the weekly Top 10 in 87 countries. These are Netflix-reported viewing figures. Its production report also says more than 500 masks were created for the characters. Details are in Netflix’s production-impact announcement.
