She turned 60 the following month. That makes her younger than Granny’s appearance might suggest—but the birth year is not entirely consistent across references.
How old was Irene Ryan when The Beverly Hillbillies began?
Ryan played Daisy “Granny” Moses in The Beverly Hillbillies, whose run the Television Academy lists as 1962–1971. The series premiered in September 1962. Counting from the reported birth date of October 17, 1902, Ryan was 59 at the debut and would turn 60 the next month. The Television Academy’s series entry identifies her as Granny and gives the show’s run; CountyHistorian.com’s biographical entry supplies the 1902 birth date used for that calculation.
Why the age needs a caveat
The 1902 birth year should be treated as reported, not as an uncontested archival fact. A reference-work result surfaced by Glen Park History lists Ryan’s birth date as October 17, 1903, one year later. If that date is used, she would have been 58 at the September 1962 premiere and turned 59 in October. Glen Park History’s 2022 account reports that Ryan was 59 when the series began, which matches the calculation using 1902. Its article is the source for the reported debut-era age and the conflicting reference listing.
Granny’s age was a character choice
Ryan’s age as an actor and Granny’s age as a character are separate questions. The sources cited here establish Ryan’s role and her age around the premiere, but they do not establish a precise age for Granny. The useful takeaway is that Ryan was just short of 60 when the series launched, not an elderly performer; her older persona belonged to the role.
