Spoiler-heavy review: Episode 8 pauses the present-day pursuit of the Jackal to make his past—and the damage around him—the story. It is a bold structural gamble that pays off most clearly in its Afghanistan flashbacks, though Larry’s devastating prison scene gives the hour a harsher jolt than its quieter character work can fully absorb.
What happens in The Day of the Jackal Episode 8?
In the aftermath of the failed attempt on Ulle Dag Charles (UDC) in Tallinn, the Jackal disappears from the immediate action. Investigators identify the second shooter as a member of UDC’s security detail, while a manifesto challenges UDC’s reasons for launching River. Rather than follow the next move in the hunt, the episode splits its attention between the fallout and a story from 2013 Afghanistan.
That shift is the episode’s central risk. At a point when the Tallinn plot seems poised to accelerate, the show asks viewers to wait for the chase and invest instead in the people trying to understand the Jackal. The official Sky episode explanation likewise frames the hour around the failed attempt’s aftermath, the Jackal’s past and Bianca’s investigation.
Who is Alexander Duggan?
The Afghanistan flashbacks reveal the Jackal as Alexander Duggan, a British Army sniper. In 2013, he is working with spotter Gary and arguing about patience and target selection. As the episode fills in the unit’s covert work, a mission at a wedding celebration exposes the civilian deaths caught up in it. The flashbacks ultimately show Alexander triggering an explosion that kills his unit, while Gary survives.

This material gives the Jackal a history without making that history a simple excuse. The episode connects his origin to a specific catastrophic event, but it does not erase the choices he has made since. Its strongest scenes are the ones that let the tension between the disciplined soldier and the assassin emerge through action and the relationship with Gary, rather than treating the past as a complete psychological answer.
The backstory also arrives quickly. The classified-file mystery has been a source of suspense, but the revelation risks making the character feel more explained than mysterious. For this reviewer, the flashbacks earn their place because they dramatize the rupture in Alexander’s life; they are less compelling when they seem to promise a neat account of how one man became the Jackal.

Sky attributes a production detail to Eddie Redmayne, who plays the Jackal: “Before we started filming, I had met many snipers who had been working in Helmand, and it was through the specificity of their experience, for example, the way the disguises are built and where you see jackal and Gary emerge out of the rock, that is all unique. In fact, Paul Biddiss, our wonderful specialist, built that by hand himself.” That is a description of the production’s approach, not evidence that the episode’s events represent a complete or documentary account of military history.
Does the present-day story hold together without the Jackal?
Bianca’s effort to uncover who Duggan was gives the episode an investigative spine. She obtains access to a heavily redacted service file through official channels, but the file’s version of how the unit died does not satisfy her. The gap between the official account and what she suspects keeps the past from becoming only a flashback: it is also an active problem she is trying to solve.

In Spain, Nuria confronts what the Tallinn news means and demands the truth from her husband. Her response adds a personal consequence to the Jackal’s disappearance, even if the episode’s attention is divided between her, Bianca and the Afghanistan story. A review surfaced by IMDb News at CBR describes the hour as focusing largely on people in the Jackal’s orbit and compares the choice to Queen without Freddie Mercury. That is one critic’s characterization, not a consensus; the episode’s trade-off is clear either way: less of the central figure in the present, more room for those living with the consequences of his actions.
What happens to Larry?
Content warning: graphic suicide. Bianca visits Larry in prison, where an emotionally charged confrontation turns on her culpability and what motivates her. Larry then uses a concealed shiv to cut his own throat. The scene is an abrupt tonal escalation and is likely to be distressing.

The moment gives Bianca’s visit a terrible finality, and it sharpens the episode’s interest in what “sorry” can mean when harm cannot be undone. Lashana Lynch, who plays Bianca, describes the encounter as important because “Bianca is in a place whereby she’s learning what the word sorry means,” in an excerpt from a longer statement reported by Sky. The scene’s emotional purpose is legible, but its graphic force can also feel like shock taking precedence over the more restrained character work elsewhere in the hour.

Mostly, yes—but unevenly. The episode’s most persuasive argument for stepping away from the Tallinn pursuit is Alexander’s past: the Afghanistan scenes turn the hidden identity into a dramatic event rather than a file of facts. Bianca’s investigation and Nuria’s confrontation keep the present consequences in view, though neither fully replaces the momentum of watching the Jackal operate.

The Larry scene is a consequential blow, but its extremity risks overwhelming the quieter questions the episode has raised about responsibility and remorse. Episode 8 therefore works better as a hinge than as a conventional suspense installment: it changes what the audience knows about the Jackal and leaves the present-day story waiting for its next move. Sky describes the series as a modern retelling of Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel; that establishes the adaptation’s source, but not episode-by-episode fidelity to the book. The Sky season guide also identifies Episode 8 as the reveal of the Jackal’s past and Bianca’s attempt to access his classified file.
