WWE has not stated a cause of death in its obituary or biography. White is remembered for refereeing The Undertaker–Mankind Hell in a Cell match in 1998, suffering a career-ending shoulder injury in another Hell in a Cell match in 2002, and continuing to work behind the scenes for WWE after he left the ring.
Who was Tim White?
White joined WWE in 1985, initially working with Andre the Giant as his handler and as a part-time referee. After Andre died, White moved into full-time officiating. WWE says he worked across the Golden, New Generation, Attitude, and Ruthless Aggression eras, and remained with the company as an official and talent agent behind the scenes until 2009. WWE’s obituary described more than two decades of work as a referee and official.
That career included both the visible pressure of officiating major matches and less-public work supporting talent and the company. His legacy is therefore not limited to the matches in which fans saw him at ringside.
Why is Tim White associated with the 1998 Hell in a Cell match?
White refereed The Undertaker versus Mankind at King of the Ring 1998, a match remembered for Mick Foley’s fall from the top of the cell. In WWE’s oral history of the match, White recalled checking whether Foley was breathing after the fall. Foley said he could continue, and the match went on; White later described feeling relieved when it was over.

That incident is distinct from the injury that ended White’s in-ring refereeing career. He officiated the 1998 match; he was not injured in that match.
What happened to White in the 2002 Hell in a Cell match?
At Judgment Day 2002, White refereed Triple H versus Chris Jericho inside Hell in a Cell. During the match, he was sent into the cage and landed on a shoulder that had previously been repaired. WWE’s account says the injury left him barely able to raise his right arm and ended his in-ring refereeing career. Its feature on the physical demands of refereeing quotes White: “It is just as physical in the ring for referees as it is for wrestlers.”
