The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is a 2021 supernatural horror film inspired by the 1981 Arne Johnson case—but the film’s possession story is not an established fact of that case. Johnson attempted to use demonic possession as a defense after killing Alan Bono; the judge did not allow possession evidence at trial.
What is The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It?
Released in 2021, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is the third film in The Conjuring series. Michael Chaves directed it, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick wrote it, and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film’s premise centers on Arne Johnson and his claim that demonic possession explained the killing.
Apple TV lists the U.S. film as a Warner Bros. horror title with a 1 hour 52 minute runtime and an R rating for terror, violence, and disturbing images. See Apple TV’s U.S. listing.
Is the film based on a true story?
It is based on a real case, but it dramatizes the events and adds a supernatural narrative. The documented connection is that Arne Cheyenne Johnson killed his landlord, Alan Bono, in Brookfield, Connecticut, in 1981, and attempted to argue that possession accounted for his actions. The court did not accept that theory as evidence.

TIME’s Laura Zornosa reported on October 18, 2023, that the judge ruled possession was not an acceptable defense and would not permit related evidence. That ruling means the possession claim was an allegation, not a finding that Johnson was supernaturally possessed. The film’s scenes and paranormal events should not be treated as verified historical record.
What happened in the Arne Johnson case?
In 1981, Johnson killed Alan Bono in Brookfield, Connecticut. Johnson attempted a possession-based defense, but the judge barred evidence related to possession. The case therefore provides the film’s central legal and historical premise, not court-established proof of a demon or possession.
