It ranks the captains and the former captain Mereoleona by overall combat threat, versatility, battlefield control, and matchup flexibility—not by an official score. The story changes who holds a captaincy over time, and no official source publishes a canonical power ranking.
How this ranking works
Black Clover’s captains do not fight in interchangeable ways: some excel at direct offense, while others offer defense, control, or support that can decide a battle without producing the biggest attack. The order below weighs demonstrated combat threat alongside adaptability, control, range, team value, and how much a character’s success depends on the opponent. A favorable matchup can change the outcome; magic attributes are not a universal scale of strength.
The official 2023 movie character page identifies eight captains and describes selected abilities, but it does not rank them: official movie character page. The official anime roster is useful for checking names, not as a contemporary power list: official anime character roster.
Black Clover captains ranked
-
Yami Sukehiro
Yami is the strongest overall pick for this list because his fighting style combines a serious finishing threat with practical adaptability in close combat. His Dark Magic can threaten opponents directly, while his instincts and ability to respond under pressure make him dangerous across more than one kind of matchup. The official synopsis identifies him as the Black Bulls captain and names him among the captains abducted during the Spade Kingdom attack: official series introduction.

Mereoleona Vermillion
Mereoleona belongs in a captain ranking even though her role is tied to a change in leadership: her official anime profile says she becomes Crimson Lion Kings captain after Fuegoleon is gravely injured. It also identifies her Flame attribute, Mana Skin, and Mana Zone. Most notably, the profile says, “It is said in a battle, she is stronger than her brother Fuegoleon.” That is a qualified statement from her character profile, not a universal ranking of every captain: official Mereoleona profile.
-
Dorothy Unsworth
Dorothy’s Dream Magic gives her unusually strong battlefield control: the official movie page says she can trap opponents in a dream world. That kind of ability can overwhelm a fight through its conditions rather than sheer damage, making her ceiling formidable. Her placement is lower than the top two because this list weighs reliable all-purpose combat threat as well as a potentially decisive, matchup-sensitive technique. The official profile’s description establishes the ability, not its standing against every other captain.
-
Nozel Silva
Nozel’s Mercury Magic gives him a flexible balance of offense and defense, making him a strong all-around fighter rather than a specialist whose value depends on one trick. The official movie page identifies him as captain of the Silver Eagles and names Mercury as his attribute. It also describes him as Fuegoleon’s rival, but rivalry is characterization, not proof that their combat abilities are equal. Official character details.
-
Fuegoleon Vermillion
Fuegoleon’s Flame Magic and leadership make him a formidable direct combatant. The official film page identifies him as captain of the Crimson Lion Kings and describes him as a leader; those details establish his role and attribute, not a comparative score. Mereoleona’s profile offers a direct, but carefully qualified, comparison: it says she is considered stronger than her brother in battle. That supports placing her above him here without treating the statement as a definitive ranking against the rest of the roster. Official film character page; Mereoleona profile.

William Vangeance
William’s World Tree Magic is a distinct source of battlefield and team value, so raw attack power alone would undersell him. The official movie page names him captain of the Golden Dawn and lists World Tree as his attribute. The official synopsis also names him among the captains abducted during the Spade Kingdom attack. This ranking places him below the most dangerous individual duelists while recognizing that his broader utility can matter greatly in a group fight. Official character page; official series introduction.
-
Jack the Ripper
Jack’s Severing Magic is built around cutting through opposition, giving him a clear offensive identity. The official movie page identifies him as captain of the Green Praying Mantises and lists Severing as his attribute. His focused threat is valuable, but this ranking gives more credit to fighters with wider control, defense, or adaptability across varied opponents. Official character details.
-
Rill Boismortier
Rill’s Painting Magic suggests an adaptable combat style, and the official movie page lists him as Aqua Deer captain with that attribute. He has creative potential, but the evidence supplied for this roster does not establish a comparative record strong enough to place him above the more consistently threatening entries. The low placement is an editorial judgment, not a claim that his magic has a fixed ceiling. Official character page.
-
Kaiser Granvorka
Kaiser is the hardest character to rank by an offense-first measure. The official movie page calls him “the kingdom’s strongest shield” and identifies him as captain of the Purple Orcas with Vortex Magic. That defensive specialization can be exceptionally valuable in protecting allies, even if it does not translate directly into the highest one-on-one finishing threat. His position reflects this list’s emphasis on overall combat threat rather than a judgment that defense is unimportant. Official character details.

Charlotte Roselei
Charlotte’s Briar Magic offers a control-oriented profile, and the official movie page identifies her as captain of the Blue Rose with that attribute. In a ranking that balances direct threat with control, her particular placement is one of the least certain: matchup, circumstances, and how much control an opponent can resist all matter. The official character list establishes her role and magic, not a verdict on her relative strength. Official character page.
Who is the strongest Black Clover captain?
For an overall combat ranking, Yami is the pick at the top, with Mereoleona close behind. That is an editorial verdict, not an official canon result. The clearest official comparative statement in the cited character material concerns Mereoleona and Fuegoleon only: her profile says it is said that she is stronger than her brother in battle. It does not compare her with every captain.
Why captain rankings change with the story
“Captain” is a story-period role, not a fixed list of people. The official anime profile says Mereoleona takes over the Crimson Lion Kings captain position after Fuegoleon leaves because of a grave injury. Yami and William are also specifically identified as captains in the official synopsis of the Spade Kingdom attack. This ranking includes Mereoleona as a former or acting captain alongside the named captains to address the common question of how she compares with them; it should not be read as a roster from one precise scene.
The official site says the manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump and Jump GIGA from February 2015 to May 2026: official series introduction. Its anime and movie character pages establish identities and selected powers, but they do not supply a complete comparative feat guide. The ordering is therefore best read as a reasoned judgment across story developments, not as a numbered canon tier list.
