The story took shape around Timberlake and Biel’s announced 2011 breakup, speculation about Timberlake’s Friends with Benefits co-star, and a separate anecdote about Kunis nodding off during a scene. Those are distinct accounts, not proof of a relationship or the breakup’s cause.
What was confirmed about Timberlake and Biel’s breakup?
In March 2011, representatives for Timberlake and Biel said the couple had “mutually” decided to part ways and remained friends with love and respect for one another. That statement confirms what their representatives announced; it does not explain why they split or identify a third person as a cause. ABC News reported the statement on March 11, 2011.
Why did Mila Kunis enter the story?
Timberlake and Kunis were working together on Friends with Benefits, and coverage of their on-screen chemistry appeared alongside speculation about Timberlake’s newly reported split. ABC News included commentary wondering whether Kunis might interest him, but that was speculation—not evidence that they were dating or that Timberlake left Biel for her. The contemporaneous report makes that distinction important.
In a June 2011 interview about the film, Timberlake spoke warmly about Biel, calling her “the single-handedly most significant person in my life.” He said he did not want to discuss more because he wanted to protect things dear to him, including her. The remarks show what he said publicly at that time; they do not settle the private timeline of the couple’s relationship. The Los Angeles Times reproduced the Vanity Fair interview on June 1, 2011.

Was the “candid moment” Kunis falling asleep on set?
One widely repeated story from the film’s promotion concerned Kunis falling asleep during an intimate scene. In July 2011, she said it happened near the end of a very long workday: “What happened, and what started this wonderful rumor, was we were at the end of, like, a 17-hour or 20-hour workday.” She explained that she closed her eyes while the camera showed her shoulder and hair; Timberlake corroborated the production details in the same interview. The Star Tribune carried the Orlando Sentinel report on July 23, 2011.
That anecdote was about an exhausting shoot and a rumor that she had fallen asleep during the scene. It does not describe a candid romantic encounter, and it is not evidence that Kunis and Timberlake were a couple.
