Michael Bergin’s 2004 book The Other Man: a Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette & Me presents his first-person account of a relationship he said he had with Carolyn Bessette, including claims that it continued after she married John F. Kennedy Jr. Those claims are Bergin’s account, not independently established facts; Bessette did not confirm them in the reporting reviewed.
What is The Other Man about?
Written by Michael Bergin, the book recounts his version of his relationship with Bessette and her relationship with Kennedy. In a March 2004 report, the Irish Independent described Bergin as claiming that he and Bessette had been lovers for years before her September 1996 marriage, and that their relationship resumed afterward. Bergin also described conversations in which, according to his account, Bessette said Kennedy had called again and that she was not attracted to him at the time. These are reported claims about private events, not independently corroborated biography.
A second report attributed further details to Bergin, including his claim that he and Bessette lived together for 11 days while Kennedy was away. The same report noted that the book did not substantiate Bessette’s suspicion that Kennedy was having an affair. The allegation and the qualification belong together: neither should be read as proof of what happened in the couple’s marriage.
Did Carolyn Bessette have an affair with Michael Bergin?
The book says that she did, in Bergin’s telling. The responsible answer is that the available reporting documents Bergin’s allegation, not independent confirmation. A 2023 retrospective by Infobae likewise says Bessette never confirmed his account. Kennedy and Bessette died in 1999, before Bergin’s book appeared, so they could not respond to it as a published book.

How should readers assess Bergin’s account?
The book’s value as a source is that Bergin presents himself as a participant describing his own experience. That first-person perspective is not the same as corroboration: the principal claims about Bessette’s private conduct remain attributed to him in the contemporary coverage. The March 27, 2004 report quotes Bergin saying, “We were very close,” but this is reported interview speech, not a verified transcript or confirmation from Bessette.
For readers approaching the subject as documentary history, keep three distinctions clear: what Bergin says happened, what news reports say he claimed, and what has been independently confirmed. The sources cited here establish the first two; they do not establish the alleged relationship as fact.

Contemporary coverage places the book’s publication in 2004. A March 27 report referred to it as Bergin’s new book; a March 28 report said it would reach bookshops that Tuesday. This supports the publication-era date, but does not establish a particular publisher, ISBN, edition, page count, or whether a copy is currently in stock.
