There is no verified ranking of “the most expensive charities” made by Keanu Reeves—and available reporting does not establish that he created any charities. What it does report is that he once described a private foundation supporting children’s hospitals and cancer research. The widely repeated claim that he gave away 70% of his Matrix salary was denied by his publicist, while a viral story about him paying for a stranger’s kidney transplant was found false.
What is known about Reeves’s private foundation?
In a 2009 Ladies’ Home Journal interview, Reeves reportedly described a private foundation that had been operating for “five or six years” and helped “a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research.” The Economic Times relayed those remarks in 2018 and quoted him as saying he did not want to attach his name to the foundation. The Economic Times report is a secondary account of the interview.
The report does not name the foundation, identify the hospitals, or give grant amounts. It therefore supports a limited conclusion: Reeves reportedly said he supported children’s hospitals and cancer research through a private foundation, but the public information cited here does not establish which organizations received funding or how much they received.
Did Reeves donate 70% of his Matrix salary?
The claim that Reeves donated 70% of his Matrix salary is not confirmed. A 2026 Times of India report says his publicist denied the 70% claim. The often-repeated figure of $31.5 million is an associated calculation, not a verified donation total. The Times of India report does not establish that he gave that amount to a charity.

Did he pay for a stranger’s kidney transplant?
No reliable evidence supports the viral story that Reeves handed an envelope of cash to a stranger to pay for a kidney transplant. Snopes found the story false and reported that photographs shared alongside it were unrelated to the claim. Snopes’s fact-check explains why the anecdote should not be treated as a documented donation.
What about Camp Rainbow Gold and the animal-sanctuary story?
Camp Rainbow Gold
A report says Reeves auctioned a virtual meeting in 2020 to benefit Camp Rainbow Gold, an organization that supports children affected by cancer. This is a report of a fundraiser, distinct from the private foundation he described. The available account does not establish the proceeds, so it cannot be used to calculate a donation total.

Animal sanctuary
A 2025 viral claim said Reeves had founded an animal sanctuary. Lead Stories reported in 2026 that the story had no verifiable details and used an AI-generated image. It is not evidence that Reeves created or funded a sanctuary. Lead Stories’s fact-check describes the claim’s problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can any of Reeves’s charities be ranked by donation size?
No. The available reporting does not provide verified totals for named charities, and it does not establish a ranking. The private foundation account, the Camp Rainbow Gold fundraiser report, and the false viral anecdotes are different kinds of claims; none supplies a reliable basis for naming a “most expensive” charity or assigning Reeves a total donation amount. For a giving claim to be verifiable, look for a named recipient and an official record or statement that documents the contribution.
