The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum traces the group’s history to the 1940s, when it was known as the Oak Ridge Quartet, a Knoxville gospel group. The quartet made regular Grand Ole Opry appearances from 1946. After signing with Columbia in 1973, the group moved toward country recording; a later move to ABC/Dot preceded its breakthrough hit. The Hall of Fame reports 34 Top Ten hits, including 17 No. 1s.
“Elvira”: the signature crossover hit
Released in 1981, “Elvira” became the Oak Ridge Boys’ first crossover hit. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum reports that it reached No. 1 on the country chart and No. 5 on the pop chart. Richard Sterban’s deep bass refrain is central to the record’s instantly recognizable sound. The Recording Academy also lists the group’s “Elvira” Grammy entry.

Lead singer Duane Allen described the audience the group hoped to reach: “We wanted ‘Elvira’ to be a summer record for families of four – two kids, a mother and a father – on vacation in an automobile, listening to the radio.” That broad, sing-along appeal helps explain why the song remains the group’s most familiar recording to many listeners.
“Elvira” appears on the album Fancy Free. In 2011, the group recorded a thirtieth-anniversary version for a Cracker Barrel project.

“Y’all Come Back Saloon”: the country breakthrough
Before the pop-chart success of “Elvira,” “Y’all Come Back Saloon” established the group as a country hitmaker. After the move to ABC/Dot, the song reached No. 3 in 1977, giving the group its breakthrough country hit. It is the clearest starting point for hearing the transition from gospel-group roots into country recording.
“Bobbie Sue”: doo-wop color and another No. 1
The title track from Bobbie Sue brought a doo-wop influence into the group’s country sound. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum reports that the song reached No. 1 on the country chart in 1982 and No. 12 on the pop chart. Its pop-chart showing makes it a useful companion to “Elvira” for listeners interested in the group’s crossover-era appeal.

“American Made”: country hit with a life beyond radio
“American Made” reached No. 1 on the country chart in 1983. It also became a popular advertising jingle for an American beer company, giving the song a place in commercial culture as well as the group’s hit catalog.
