Spoilers for The Old Man Season 2, Episode 7, “XIV.” Dan tries to bargain his way out of Pavlovich’s control while poisoned, Zoe is caught in a violent attack, and Harper rejects Marion’s plan. The episode’s biggest reversal comes in its closing scene: Parwana is alive and leading the tribe that has taken control of the Meshbahar deposit. That is a cliffhanger into the season finale, “XV,” not the resolution of the story.
What episode is “XIV”?
“XIV” is Season 2, Episode 7 of The Old Man, not the season finale. TV Guide lists its U.S. air date as October 17, 2024, and gives it a 47-minute runtime. The season finale is Episode 8, “XV.” TV Guide’s Season 2 episode guide identifies the episode and its place in the season.

What happens in “XIV”?
The episode moves among three tense conversations: Dan with Suleyman Pavlovich, Zoe with an American agent using the name Pete, and Harper with Marion. Rather than resolving the season’s conflicts through a sustained action sequence, “XIV” uses bargaining and revelations to shift who appears to hold power. Dan’s bargain with Pavlovich
Held by Pavlovich and suffering from the neurotoxin introduced at the end of the previous episode, Dan experiences hallucinations of Parwana. As his condition worsens, he weighs killing Pavlovich against a plan involving Zoe. The proposed story for authorities is that Dan killed Morgan Bote and Faraz Hamzad in revenge for Parwana’s kidnapping. In return, Pavlovich would take credit for Dan’s death and allow Dan and Zoe to leave with the antidote, money, and Parwana’s body.

Pavlovich initially considers the offer. An alarming phone call changes the calculation: he cancels the arrangement and orders an attack. Dan’s poisoned state makes the negotiation more than a tactical gambit; he is trying to secure Zoe’s escape while uncertain how much time he has.
Zoe’s attempt to find protection
Zoe turns herself in, hoping to get help and protection. Pete warns her that immunity will not shield her from everyone angered by Bote’s death. Pavlovich’s men attack the police station, killing Pete and an officer. Zoe shoots one attacker with a shotgun, and Julian arrives to take her away. She survives the immediate assault, but the episode leaves her safety unresolved.

Harper learns what Marion intended
Harper confronts Marion over her connection to Pavlovich and the cartel. Marion explains that she intended to make Parwana a Chinese asset and use her to draw Hamzad into a wider political arrangement. Harper rejects the proposal. The conversation ends with a call from Pavlovich that signals his alarm, linking Marion’s plans to the crisis unfolding elsewhere.
What does the ending reveal?
In the closing scene, Pavlovich tries to minimize the crisis around the Meshbahar deposit. The conversation makes clear that his men have been defeated and have lost control of it. Parwana is alive and leading the local tribe.

That revelation overturns the assumption that Parwana is simply a captive whose fate depends on Dan’s deal. She is instead at the center of the force that has changed control of the deposit. The episode does not show what that means for Dan, Zoe, or Pavlovich’s wider plans; those consequences carry into “XV.”

The title’s “impossible” turn can be read as a sudden reversal of the apparent balance of power. Dan attempts to negotiate while poisoned, Zoe survives a police-station assault, and Parwana’s return reveals that the cartel has lost ground. Information and shifting loyalties do as much to move the story as physical force.
The problem is that none of those developments settles the characters’ immediate danger. Dan remains ill, Zoe has just escaped an attack, and Pavlovich’s position has been destabilized rather than resolved. “XIV” ends by opening the central question for the finale: how will Parwana’s leadership reshape the struggle over Meshbahar and the people caught in it?
