Boman Irani makes a poised feature-directing debut, while also playing Shiv, the father; Avinash Tiwary plays his adult son, Amay. India Today’s review praised the film’s naturalistic domestic details and central performances, though it found the rift underexplained and the resolution conventional.
What is The Mehta Boys about?
The film centers on Shiv and Amay, whose strained relationship comes into focus during an unexpected 48-hour encounter. The compressed setup keeps the drama close to ordinary family life: grief after the death of Amay’s mother, uncertainty about his career, and friction with his sister Anu all shape the family’s interactions. The story is largely in Hindi, with some English and Gujarati, according to India Today.
Amazon describes the film as a Prime Video Original and Irani’s feature directorial debut. Its listed principal cast includes Irani, Tiwary, Shreya Chaudhry and Puja Sarup. Chaudhry plays Zara, who supports Amay and helps ease the emotional gap between him and Shiv.
How restrained is the family drama?
India Today reviewer Sana Farzeen describes the film as realistic and subtle. Its emotional texture comes through small, practical behaviors rather than constant confrontation: Shiv looks after his grown son in everyday ways, while Amay has a habit of eating leftover food. These are specific character details, not sweeping claims about how families behave.
That observational approach gives the actors room to register affection, resentment and discomfort in the same scene. Farzeen praises Irani both as an actor and director, and singles out Tiwary’s performance. The result, in her account, is more performance-led than plot-driven: the film’s appeal rests on watching the two men negotiate proximity as much as on learning the history of their conflict.
What informs Irani’s direction and writing?
In Amazon’s cast interview, Irani says he shaped the 48-hour story around recurring ideas of ego, stupidity and masculinity, with thematic layers in each scene. He points to an elevator blackout: Shiv declines Amay’s offered hand, turning a simple gesture into a moment about pride and masculinity. Irani says he spoke with fathers and sons and drew on real-life anecdotes, while heightening conflict for cinematic drama. “A condensed time frame is key,” he says of his writing approach.
In a Hindustan Times interview published February 5, 2025, Irani said he conducted interviews without naming participants and drew on personal experience: “We are all guilty of backseat driving and I have drawn from a lot of personal experiences.” That context helps explain the film’s focus on familiar patterns of parental advice and adult-child independence without making the story a documentary or a claim that every family shares the same dynamic.
Where does the film fall short?
Farzeen’s review is positive about the film’s restraint and performances but less persuaded by its final stretch. She finds the resolution conventional, and says the film does not fully explain how Shiv and Amay’s estrangement became so severe. She also criticizes a pre-climactic speech and calls the soundtrack forgettable.

Those reservations matter because the film asks its short encounter to carry the weight of a long-running rupture. The domestic scenes make the characters legible, but the limited explanation of the past may leave some viewers wanting a clearer account of what separated them. The ending’s conciliatory movement may likewise feel too neat for a conflict the film has not entirely unpacked.

The Mehta Boys is a measured, actor-centered family drama that gives Boman Irani a thoughtful feature-directing debut. Its everyday details and restrained performances are its strongest assets, while its underexplained estrangement and conventional resolution are the clearest weaknesses in India Today’s assessment. Viewers looking for a quiet study of parent-child tension may find more here than those expecting a deeply developed family backstory or an especially surprising payoff.
