A new Maze Runner film was reported in development at 20th Century Studios in May 2024, but the available reporting does not establish that it has entered production or has a release date. TheWrap described the project as a continuation rather than a remake or direct sequel; that was its account of the proposal, not a confirmed final story plan.
What is known about the new Maze Runner film?
In a May 3, 2024 report, TheWrap said 20th Century Studios was developing another film in the franchise. The outlet reported that Jack Paglen was in talks to write and that Wes Ball, who directed the original trilogy, was attached as a producer. Original producers Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen were also reported as attached.
TheWrap characterized the proposal as a continuation: not a remake and not a direct sequel, but a story that would presumably follow new characters trying to escape the Glade. Treat that description as the outlet’s reporting about the project at that time, not as an official, finalized synopsis. No verified direct statement from a named filmmaker or studio representative confirming the new film’s direction is available in the cited reporting.
Does it have a release date or confirmed cast?
As of October 8, 2026, the sources reviewed do not verify a production start, cast announcement, or release date for the project. They also do not establish whether the reported writer and producer attachments remain in place. That is a limit on what these sources confirm; it does not prove the project was canceled or that no later development has taken place.

How would it fit with the original trilogy?
The new project would follow three released films directed by Wes Ball. 20th Century Studios lists The Maze Runner as released September 19, 2014, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials as released September 18, 2015, and Maze Runner: The Death Cure as released January 26, 2018. The studio describes The Death Cure as the saga’s finale, which makes TheWrap’s reported “continuation” framing distinct from a direct sequel—but the new film’s precise timeline and connection to the earlier characters have not been confirmed.
| Film | Studio-listed release date | Studio-listed context |
|---|---|---|
| The Maze Runner | September 19, 2014 | Teen survivors live in the Glade and navigate a shifting maze patrolled by Grievers. |
| Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials | September 18, 2015 | Thomas and the Gladers seek information about WCKD after escaping the Maze. |
| Maze Runner: The Death Cure | January 26, 2018 | The studio presents it as the saga’s finale. |
The release dates and descriptions come from the respective 20th Century Studios listing for The Maze Runner and its listings for The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure. These are historical film pages, not updates on the proposed new project.
