There is no reliable count of how many people read the Mahabharata. The available sources offer cultural observations and evidence of historical reading communities, but no representative survey or readership total. And the answer depends on what “read” means: knowing familiar episodes, reading a retelling, or completing a particular version of the epic are different things.
Why there is no single readership number
A count would need to define its population and its measure: people in which country or language community, reading which edition, and whether a selected episode, abridgment, translation, or adaptation qualifies. The sources available here do not establish those terms or provide a national or global survey of readers.
G. N. Devy, in a 2022 excerpt from Mahabharata: The Epic and the Nation, observes that many Indians think they know the epic despite rarely reading the poem in print. That is an interpretation of reading culture, not a statistical finding: it supplies no sample, percentage, or count. Read Devy’s observation in Scroll.
Knowing the stories is not the same as reading a full text
People can encounter the Mahabharata through oral narration, performance, television, illustrated storybooks, family storytelling, and selected episodes, as well as through long printed texts. Those routes can make the story culturally familiar without someone having read an entire edition. Divya Joshi’s 2018 discussion of orality and transmission quotes A. K. Ramanujan’s formulation, “Nobody reads The Mahābhārata for the first time in India,” and distinguishes that inherited familiarity from reading the unabridged epic. These are literary-critical observations, not survey results. Read Joshi’s discussion.

What counts as “the Mahabharata” also varies
The epic is not encountered in one uniform reading form. A Critical Edition is an editorial reconstruction based on manuscript comparison; it is not a claim that every regional, translated, oral, or performance tradition is identical to that text. Devy’s Scroll excerpt describes the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute project: scholars compared 1,259 manuscripts, work ran from April 1919 to September 1966, and the resulting printed Critical Edition comprised 89,000 verses in nineteen volumes and 15,000 demi-quarto pages. Those figures describe the editorial project and its edition—not how many people read it.
A 2025 article in Journal of Dharma Studies likewise discusses why one Sanskrit text should not automatically be treated as the sole timeless “true” version, distinguishing the Critical Edition from the vulgate’s different editorial history. Its author reports a corpus of 140 contemporary English-language adaptations collected from Amazon India, with 18 entries in 2023, the latest year listed. That is a bounded collection of adaptations, not a count of books sold or people who read them. Read the article.

Historical readership is real, but it cannot answer today’s count
A 2025 Cambridge University Press chapter documents Persian and Urdu print editions and reading publics in India and Iran. It discusses the expansion of lithographic printing in the second half of the nineteenth century and the circulation of texts among middle-class and popular audiences across regions. This shows that the epic has had readers in multiple languages and settings; historical evidence of those communities does not establish how many people read it now. Read the Cambridge chapter.
Choose a reading form before asking how many readers there are
If you want to read the epic yourself, the useful first question is whether you want a full translation or a shorter retelling. The editions below serve different purposes and should not be counted as interchangeable measures of reading the complete text.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, how many people actually read it?
No defensible total is established by these sources. They support a more careful conclusion: familiarity with the Mahabharata can come through many channels, while reading a complete printed text is a narrower and different activity. Without a defined edition, language, population, and meaning of “read,” a numerical answer would be misleading.
