Chinese New Year is one prominent observance: in China it is commonly called the Spring Festival. The broader term Lunar New Year also covers celebrations in other cultures, whose names, dates and customs differ.
What does Lunar New Year mean?
A lunisolar calendar follows both the cycles of the Moon and the solar year. Lunar New Year celebrations welcome a new year according to such a calendar; in many traditions, the occasion also carries the symbolism of spring, renewal and fresh beginnings. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art describes it as a celebration of spring’s arrival and the start of a new year on a lunisolar calendar (Smithsonian, “Lunar New Year Celebration”).
The meaning is not limited to a single ritual or belief. For many celebrants, the holiday is a time to reunite with immediate and extended family, welcome good fortune and strengthen community ties. UNESCO describes the Chinese Spring Festival as involving practices to welcome the new year, pray for good fortune, celebrate family reunions and promote community harmony (UNESCO, “Spring festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of traditional new year”).
Is Lunar New Year the same as Chinese New Year?
Not exactly. Chinese New Year is a common name for the Chinese celebration, which is known in China as the Spring Festival. Lunar New Year is a broader English-language term for new-year observances in more than one culture. Korea and Vietnam also widely celebrate Lunar New Year, alongside China and communities with significant overseas Chinese populations. The names, dates and practices vary, so Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year should not be treated as interchangeable labels for every community.

Nor does Asian heritage automatically mean someone celebrates the holiday or follows the Chinese zodiac. The Smithsonian specifically cautions that many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders do not observe the Chinese or lunar zodiac (Smithsonian, “National Museum of Asian Art Announces 2026 Lunar New Year Festival”).
How is the Chinese Spring Festival observed?
Practices differ between families and places. The Smithsonian describes a 15-day Spring Festival season in China, ending on the evening of the Lantern Festival. Examples of observances include cleaning the home, placing red paper cuttings on windows, hanging auspicious couplets on doors, shopping at holiday markets and sharing a New Year’s Eve reunion dinner (Smithsonian, “Lunar New Year”).

Food and good fortune
Some foods carry symbolic associations. A whole fish, for example, is served in some Chinese New Year traditions as a sign of abundance. Smithsonian educational materials also describe a folk-luck custom of hiding a coin or jujube in dumplings. These are particular customs, not requirements for everyone celebrating the holiday (Smithsonian, “Spring Festival, Lunar New Year”).
The Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival marks the close of the Chinese Spring Festival season described by the Smithsonian. Its examples include eating tangyuan, sweet glutinous rice balls, and children carrying lanterns. The museum also describes fireworks among the season’s customs. These practices should be understood as examples of Chinese observance, not a universal checklist for Lunar New Year.

When is Lunar New Year in 2026?
The Chinese Spring Festival falls on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, so its date shifts against the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, Chinese Lunar New Year begins on February 17; the Smithsonian identifies the year as the Year of the Fire Horse (Smithsonian Institution, “2026: Year of the Horse”).
That date and zodiac designation refer to the Chinese observance. Other communities may use different calendars or follow different zodiac traditions, so February 17 should not be assumed to be the date for every Lunar New Year celebration.
