The Rings of Power Season 2 Finale Review: “Shadow and Flame”

“Shadow and Flame” gives The Rings of Power Season 2 a resonant Celebrimbor–Sauron centerpiece, but its many simultaneous climaxes make the finale uneven.

Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 8, “Shadow and Flame.” The finale brings the siege of Eregion to its end and turns several season-long threads at once: Sauron takes the Nine, Celebrimbor dies, the Stranger is revealed as Gandalf, and the Balrog emerges in Khazad-dûm. Its strongest passage is the final contest between Celebrimbor and Sauron, where the show makes its title phrase a warning about the cost of seeking power. The many other developments give the episode scale, though they also compete for the space its central confrontation needs.

What happens in “Shadow and Flame”

“Shadow and Flame” is the eighth and final episode of Season 2. It aired October 3, 2024, closing a season that premiered August 29 and ran for eight episodes. The series streams exclusively on Prime Video, according to Amazon’s season guide.

The episode resolves the siege of Eregion with a devastating victory for Sauron: he gets the Nine rings intended for Men, while Celebrimbor dies after completing the forging. Elsewhere, the Stranger’s identity is settled as Gandalf; King Durin III dies confronting the Balrog unleashed in Khazad-dûm; and Númenor’s Faithful are displaced as Queen-Regent Míriel is arrested. Gil-galad rallies the elves to fight back, giving the finale a forward-looking close rather than a sense that the conflict is over.

These are the series’ adaptation choices, not a beat-by-beat rendering of Tolkien’s chronology. The show is set in the Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and Amazon frames the season around evil’s return and the forging of powers, kingdoms, and legacies.

Why Celebrimbor and Sauron give the finale its center

The episode’s most effective idea is carried by a phrase whose meaning changes between the characters. Sauron initially offers “Lord of the Rings” as an honorific for Celebrimbor. In their final exchange, Celebrimbor turns it back on Sauron: “No, you are their prisoner, Sauron—Lord of the Rings.” Charles Edwards plays the line not as a triumphant quip but as a last act of judgment.

In Vanity Fair’s discussion with the showrunners, J.D. Payne explains that Celebrimbor’s final words recast the title as a warning and curse. Patrick McKay describes the shift from honorific to something like a “death sentence.” The irony is the scene’s point: rings promise command, yet the desire to master others can make their maker captive to the very power he seeks.

McKay’s description of the story as “The fate of the world is being decided by two people in a room” captures why this exchange lands more forcefully than sheer scale. The siege supplies the stakes, but the emotional drama is intimate: two makers, each trying to define what creation and power mean, and one refusing to let the other have the final word.

How the other storylines shape the ending

The Stranger’s identity

Confirming the Stranger as Gandalf closes one of the season’s most conspicuous mysteries. The reveal gives the character a name and places him within a familiar mythology, but the finale has less room to make that recognition feel as emotionally earned as Celebrimbor’s reckoning. For viewers invested in the mystery, it is a clear payoff; for viewers more interested in the character’s particular journey, naming him is not the same as resolving it.

Khazad-dûm and the Balrog

Durin III’s death confronting the Balrog gives the dwarven plot a tragic climax and makes the creature’s return consequential rather than merely visual. The moment has the weight of a family and kingdom paying for choices made under pressure. It is among the finale’s most affecting supporting threads, even as the episode must move quickly between it and Eregion.

Númenor and the elves

The Faithful’s ousting and Míriel’s arrest extend the season’s political upheaval into the finale. Gil-galad’s rallying of the elves, meanwhile, changes the closing mood: after Eregion’s fall, the story turns toward resistance. Director Charlotte Brändström said she intended that choice to leave viewers with hope and prepare the next season. It offers a meaningful direction, though it is setup as much as closure.

Does the finale’s pace hold together?

The episode’s ambition is also its structural strain. Eregion, Khazad-dûm, Númenor, the Stranger, and the elves all receive major turns. Their convergence makes the world feel broad and the season’s conflicts interconnected, but not every thread gets equal time to register. The Celebrimbor–Sauron story has a clear emotional destination; some other developments function more as consequential announcements or bridges into what comes next.

That makes the ending a mixed success as a season finale. It delivers resolution where the season’s central conflict is concerned, and the rings’ transfer gives that resolution a troubling consequence. Yet the rapid succession of reveals can make the episode feel like several climaxes sharing one hour rather than a single climax gathering force. The finale is most coherent when it returns to the question embodied by Celebrimbor: whether power can be made or wielded without becoming a form of captivity.

Spectacle, performance, and critical response

The siege and the Balrog give the finale the scale expected of a fantasy epic, but spectacle is not uniformly persuasive. Brändström said she approached Galadriel and Sauron’s sword confrontation as a performance piece built around tension between them, rather than a sequence designed around “cool shots.” That intention suits a season in which their relationship has been defined by manipulation and recognition. Whether the scene fully achieves that balance is a matter of taste; its character stakes are more compelling than spectacle alone.

Reception reflects that divide. At access on October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed an 86% Tomatometer from 14 reviews. That is a critic-aggregation snapshot, not an audience score, and it can change. The page’s excerpts range from the Daily Telegraph’s criticism of noisy CGI and the show’s handling of Tolkien to the AV Club’s praise for character and performance complexity.

Forbes contributor Erik Kain’s October 3, 2024 review was sharply negative overall, while praising Charlie Vickers as Sauron and the Durin family scene. That response is useful as one critical reading, not a measure of consensus. The contrast points to the finale’s central trade-off: viewers may find the character work vivid even when the plotting or visual excess does not persuade them.

Verdict: a powerful centerpiece in an overcrowded finale

“Shadow and Flame” earns its strongest moments through Celebrimbor and Sauron, turning a familiar title into a compact argument about power, ownership, and enslavement. Durin’s final confrontation with the Balrog adds genuine tragedy, while the Gandalf reveal and the political reversals broaden the season’s horizon. But the number of major turns leaves some developments less fully felt, and the ending’s promise of resistance is also a handoff to the next chapter.

As a finale, it is emotionally clearest when it narrows its focus and least satisfying when it tries to make every storyline feel like a climax at once. The result is uneven, but its central exchange gives the season a memorable final idea: the one who seeks to rule through the Rings may become ruled by them.
