The Mavericks canceled their remaining 2025 performances after frontman Raul Malo said his cancer had taken a turn and that he had developed leptomeningeal disease (LMD). He said he needed to rest and recover. Malo died in December 2025; his official website now marks his life as 1965–2025.
Why The Mavericks canceled their 2025 concerts
In a September 2025 message reproduced by Tarrytown Music Hall, Malo said his health had “taken a turn” and that he had developed LMD. He wrote that “all shows going forward are canceled” and said it was time to focus on resting and recovering. The Associated Press later reported that the diagnosis forced The Mavericks to cancel dates with Dwight Yoakam during their joint tour.
The Mavericks’ music mixed country and roots traditions with rock ’n’ roll and Latin rhythmic influences. Malo was the band’s frontman and songwriter, and its repertoire included “Here Comes the Rain,” “What A Crying Shame” and “Dance The Night Away.” Their 2024 album was titled Moon & Stars.
What Raul Malo said about his cancer
Malo said he had developed leptomeningeal disease. In the September message reproduced by Tarrytown Music Hall, he said radiation would start the following day and mentioned possible chemotherapy and alternative therapies. Those were plans he described at the time, not a current treatment update.
