Spoilers for all of Squid Game season 2. The masked Front Man is Hwang In-ho, detective Hwang Jun-ho’s missing brother. In season 2, he enters the competition as Player 001 and introduces himself to Gi-hun as Oh Young-il. Gi-hun trusts him as a teammate, but the audience knows he is the person running the games. By the finale, In-ho has crushed Gi-hun’s rebellion and shot Jung-bae. Gi-hun still does not know Young-il’s true identity when season 2 ends.
Who is the Front Man in season 2?
The Front Man is Hwang In-ho, the older brother of detective Hwang Jun-ho. His season 2 disguise is Oh Young-il, Player 001. He joins Gi-hun’s game under that name, letting Gi-hun believe the two are fellow contestants rather than adversaries.
The audience is shown the truth while Gi-hun remains unaware. That gap between what viewers know and what Gi-hun knows drives the tension of their scenes together.
Why does In-ho join Gi-hun’s game?
In-ho knows Gi-hun has returned to stop the games. Taking part as Young-il gives him a way to watch Gi-hun closely, understand his plan, and earn his confidence. The deception is part of the strategy from the start, according to Netflix’s season 2 explanation.

Gi-hun and In-ho’s opposing beliefs
Gi-hun believes people can cooperate and act together to bring down the system. In-ho sees power and obedience as forces that will prevail regardless. Actor Lee Byung-hun has described the Front Man as trying to dismantle Gi-hun’s noble belief; creator Hwang Dong-hyuk characterizes In-ho as regarding that belief as naive. KOBIZ also notes the dramatic contrast: viewers know Young-il is the Front Man as he forms an alliance with Gi-hun.
For In-ho, the disguise makes the conflict personal. Rather than simply directing events from a control room, he becomes someone Gi-hun trusts. Lee Byung-hun said, “For the Front Man, he’s not really interested in whether or not Gi-hun dies or lives,” emphasizing that his aim is to break Gi-hun’s conviction, not merely eliminate him.

What happened to In-ho before he became the Front Man?
Netflix’s explanation of the season 2 backstory presents In-ho as a former police officer whose wife died after acute cirrhosis. The couple faced financial pressure, a desperate search for a liver donor, and her pregnancy. In-ho borrowed money, but his superiors treated the loan as a bribe, and he lost his job. He later entered the games and won.
These details are shared through Young-il’s false identity, but Netflix’s interview with Lee Byung-hun describes the story as grounded in In-ho’s life. Lee said, “Going through everything as a player, he was left torn and traumatized, which turned him into an emotionless man deprived of any hope towards humanity — and so he became Front Man.” That is the actor’s interpretation of the character, not a clinical diagnosis. His history helps explain his despair; it does not excuse his choice to run the games.

What does the Front Man do in the finale?
During the armed rebellion, In-ho kills two rebels and makes it appear that Young-il has died. He switches to the guards’ radio frequency and directs them to crush the uprising. Then he removes the Player 001 tracksuit, puts on his black cloak and mask, and returns to his role as Front Man.
When Gi-hun and Jung-bae surrender, In-ho shoots Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun. The act is meant to make Gi-hun feel that his attempt to save people was futile. Gi-hun is consumed by guilt and does not recognize that his trusted teammate was the Front Man.

Does Gi-hun know Young-il is the Front Man at the end of season 2?
No. Season 2 ends with Gi-hun unaware that Player 001 was Hwang In-ho. The audience has seen In-ho resume his masked identity, but Gi-hun has not connected Young-il to the man controlling the games. Netflix’s season 3 retrospective later confirms that Gi-hun eventually discovers the truth. That later reveal should not be confused with what Gi-hun knows at the season 2 ending.
What the betrayal changes
Young-il’s place beside Gi-hun turns the season’s ideological conflict into a betrayal between supposed teammates. Gi-hun’s belief in solidarity is tested not only by the rules of the game but by a man who has deliberately gained his trust to undermine it. In-ho’s return to the mask makes clear that his role as a contestant was a calculated performance, while Gi-hun’s ignorance leaves the emotional cost of that performance unresolved at season’s end.
