Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s art is best understood through three connected layers: the game’s roster and character concepts, later promotional illustrations that explicitly borrowed comic-page imagery, and books that preserve artwork from across the series. Capcom’s credits identify Joe Vriens and its own John D for one 2009 promotional campaign; they do not establish a complete artist list for the original game’s illustrations.
What makes Marvel vs. Capcom 2 art distinct?
The game’s crossover identity comes from bringing Marvel and Capcom characters into the same visual and playable space. But “Marvel Comics art” can mean different things: the comic-book qualities of the crossover, promotional illustrations designed to evoke comics, or the original in-game character artwork. The available credits support the first two descriptions, not the claim that Marvel comic artists created all of the game’s original illustrations.
That distinction matters when looking for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 character artwork. The game’s roster and design decisions can be discussed through a developer interview, while a specific later promotional campaign has named art credits. Neither source provides a comprehensive credit roll for every original illustration.
How the team chose characters and concepts
In an interview originally published in the March 2000 issue of Arcadia, director Tatsuya Nakae described how the team approached Marvel character selection and original Capcom characters. The interview also identifies Yoshihiro Sudo as producer. Nakae said a staff member familiar with comics suggested Marvel candidates; the team considered whether characters had readable attacks, whether they overlapped too much with previous games, and their “cool factor.” Read the translated interview with Nakae and Sudo.

Sonson, Amingo and Ruby Heart
Nakae described three different reasons behind the original Capcom character concepts. Sonson was reinterpreted as a girl based on a classic Capcom game character. Amingo was conceived as a non-human fighter who could move in unusual ways. Ruby Heart came about after the team was asked to create an original character with marquee presence.
These explanations illuminate character conception and roster design, rather than naming the illustrators responsible for all of the game’s artwork. They also show that the roster was not simply a collection of familiar names: the team considered how new characters could occupy different roles and add visual or movement variety.

The 2009 promotional art that brought comic panels into the frame
Capcom’s July 7, 2009 post credited “artist Joe Vriens and Capcom’s John D” for exclusive Marvel vs. Capcom 2 promotional art. The post highlighted a reimagined Hulk-versus-Zangief staredown, noting that its background was hand-drawn. It also said comic-book page panels inspired a new trailer. See Capcom’s July 7, 2009 post.
This is a clear comics-to-promotion connection: the campaign used a comic-page sensibility to frame the game’s crossover and named the contributors to the featured promotional work. It is not evidence that Vriens and John D created all MvC2 art, or that the game’s original character illustrations were made by Marvel comic-book artists.

Later comics are franchise context, not MvC2 art credits
Capcom’s 2017 interview with artists Sean Chen and Gerardo Sandoval concerned an exclusive comic for a physical Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 release. Written by Jim Zub and described by Capcom as 10 pages, it was a later franchise project, not the original MvC2 art campaign. Chen discussed the challenge of making characters from different visual traditions work together, including realistic characters such as Chris Redfield and more cartoon-like ones such as Viewtiful Joe. Read Capcom’s 2017 interview.
That later comic illustrates a recurring challenge in a Marvel-Capcom crossover: keeping each character recognizable while making contrasting styles coexist. It can help explain the franchise’s broader visual appeal, but should not be used to assign credit for MvC2’s original in-game artwork.
