Charged with murdering former client Sam Scales, he must build a defense while his family and colleagues confront the fallout. The result is a fresh, personal engine for the show’s courtroom suspense—and a strong reason to watch, even if the season takes time to gather speed.
What changes when Mickey becomes the defendant?
Season 4 adapts Michael Connelly’s sixth Lincoln Lawyer novel, The Law of Innocence. After Season 3’s cliffhanger, Mickey is accused of killing Sam Scales, a former client. Instead of simply steering a case from the driver’s seat, he has to live with the exposure and uncertainty he usually helps clients manage. Netflix describes the season as a ten-episode story; it premiered February 5, 2026, and is available on Netflix (Netflix Tudum).
The reversal is more than a new courtroom puzzle. Mickey’s advice now has consequences for him, and his defense places pressure on the people closest to him. Co-showrunner Ted Humphrey described the case as Mickey’s “most personal” because “he’s the client this time.” That is a promotional description, but it identifies the season’s central dramatic wager: whether the show can make its familiar legal machinery feel newly intimate.
Does the season keep its suspense?
Early reviews suggest a gradual build rather than an instantly propulsive start. Peter Travers, in a review listed by Metacritic, says the season begins slowly, then gathers momentum toward a legal-thriller finish. Decider’s review notes that the series retains a light touch despite the murder charge. That balance—serious jeopardy alongside the show’s accessible, occasionally humorous tone—is central to whether the personal stakes work.

The premise gives the courtroom scenes a different charge: every argument is tied to Mickey’s freedom, and the case reaches beyond him to his family and working team. The season’s effectiveness rests less on inventing a new legal format than on making its familiar format matter personally. Its strongest selling point is that the lawyer who normally controls the room cannot control the fact that he is the one on trial.
How do the cast and ensemble shape the case?
Manuel Garcia-Rulfo returns as Mickey, alongside Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole, and Angus Sampson. The team is not just background support: Mickey’s predicament makes their roles in his defense and their own exposure to the case part of the tension. Netflix Tudum identifies Constance Zimmer’s Dana Berg as a prosecutor and major adversary, with Sasha Alexander and Cobie Smulders joining the season (Netflix Tudum’s cast coverage).

Review summaries from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic praise the performances, and Garcia-Rulfo’s work is a particular part of the season’s appeal. The ensemble gives the story room to move between legal strategy and personal consequences instead of treating the trial as a sequence of procedural set pieces.
What do critics and viewers think so far?
At the time of access on October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 100% Tomatometer from nine critic reviews and a 79% Popcornmeter from more than 250 ratings. Metacritic listed a 76 Metascore based on four critic reviews, categorized as “Generally Favorable.” These are dated, small-sample snapshots, not fixed verdicts or proof of a ranking against every legal drama. The reviews highlighted twists, tension, performances, courtroom scenes, and entertainment, while the Metacritic-listed Travers review flagged the slow start (Rotten Tomatoes; Metacritic).

Netflix reported that the season debuted at No. 2 on its Global Top 10 English Series list with 9 million views. That is Netflix’s launch-period platform figure, not a current audience count (Netflix Top 10).
Is Season 4 worth watching—and is it Netflix’s greatest legal drama?
For viewers who enjoy a character-led legal thriller, yes: the premise refreshes the series without discarding the courtroom tension and ensemble interplay that define it. The gradual opening may ask for patience, but the shift from advocate to accused gives the season a clear emotional through-line. It is also a useful entry point for readers interested in how a long-running procedural can raise stakes by changing who bears them.

“Greatest” is best understood as an argument, not an established fact. No reliable ranking in the available evidence proves that this is the top legal drama on Netflix, let alone the greatest in the genre. Season 4 does make a persuasive case for the show’s staying power: it turns a familiar defense lawyer’s expertise back on himself and lets his relationships—not just the verdict—carry the cost.

The season is based on The Law of Innocence, the sixth novel in Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer series. A Metacritic-listed review notes reverence for the book, but that does not establish that every plot choice is a faithful transfer. The adaptation’s useful promise is the source novel’s central reversal: Mickey must defend himself rather than a client.
