The Rebels steal the Death Star plans during the Battle of Scarif in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Jyn Erso leads the effort to retrieve them from an Imperial archive, and the team transmits the plans to the Rebel ship Profundity. From there, the data reaches the Tantive IV, where Leia hides it in R2-D2 before Imperial forces capture the ship above Tatooine.
Where the original theft takes place
The 1977 film Star Wars: A New Hope begins after the theft, with the Imperial capture of the Tantive IV. The operation to take the plans from the Empire happens earlier, at Scarif, and is depicted in Rogue One. The official Star Wars Databank places the plans in a vault datatree on Scarif: Death Star.
Jyn Erso is the Rebel named in the account of the theft, but it is a team mission. Cassian Andor and the other rebels help carry it out. The plans preserve the Death Star’s design and include a flaw in its reactor system.
How the Scarif mission gets the plans off the planet
Jyn and the team retrieve the plans from the Imperial archive and transmit them to the Rebel flagship Profundity. The operation’s purpose is not complete with the vault theft: the Rebels must get the data into the hands of the Alliance. How the plans reach R2-D2
The Tantive IV intercepts the transmission from the Profundity. Leia is aboard and becomes the plans’ custodian. When Darth Vader’s forces capture the ship above Tatooine, she hides the schematics and a message in R2-D2. R2 and C-3PO escape in an escape pod, carrying the information away from the captured ship. The official Databank entries summarize the roles of Leia and R2-D2.
What happens to the plans in A New Hope
Leia’s message directs R2-D2 toward Obi-Wan Kenobi. After Leia is rescued, the plans reach the Rebel Alliance. The Rebels study the schematics, identify the Death Star’s reactor vulnerability, and use that knowledge in the attack at Yavin, where Luke Skywalker’s proton torpedoes destroy the station. Where Andor fits in the story
Andor follows Cassian Andor before the events of Rogue One; it is not the story of the Scarif theft itself. Rogue One depicts the mission, while A New Hope shows the Tantive IV aftermath and the plans’ eventual use. StarWars.com describes the series as a prequel to Rogue One: Andor.
