The small Enterprise model made for Star Trek’s first pilot, “The Cage,” and seen in the show’s opening titles returned to the Roddenberry family in April 2024. It is not the separate 11-foot filming model associated with the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. Roddenberry Entertainment said it hoped to share the recovered model with fans, but no venue or exhibition date was announced in the report.
Which Enterprise model was recovered?
The recovered object is the approximately three-foot model built for “The Cage,” the original Star Trek pilot, and used in the series’ opening title sequences. It is an early physical realization of the Enterprise design: a historical production model, not a spacecraft or a newly made replica.
It is also distinct from the 11-foot Enterprise filming model associated with the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. The recovered model was not reported as being at the Smithsonian.
How the model disappeared and resurfaced
- Production use: The small model was built for “The Cage” and appeared in the opening titles.
- Loan and disappearance: It was loaned during production of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and subsequently went missing. The account does not provide a complete chain of custody for the decades that followed.
- eBay listing: The model appeared on eBay in fall 2023. The seller came to recognize its significance.
- Authentication and return: Heritage Auctions handled authentication and held the model until it was handed to Rod Roddenberry in April 2024.
The sequence is reported by Gizmodo’s April 18, 2024 report. That report describes the authentication but does not include independent technical documentation of it.

What “heading home” means
The model returned to the Roddenberry family when Heritage Auctions handed it to Gene Roddenberry’s son, Rod Roddenberry. In an email statement reported by Gizmodo, Roddenberry said: “After five decades, I’m thrilled that someone happened upon this historic model of the USS Enterprise. I remember how it used to adorn my dad’s desk,” and thanked Heritage Auctions for facilitating its return.
He also said he looked forward to working out how to share it with Star Trek fans around the world. Roddenberry Entertainment expressed an intention to make the object available for public display, but the report named no confirmed venue or date.
