The Leopard is a six-episode limited series on Netflix, released March 5, 2025. Set in 1860s Sicily during the upheaval of Italian unification, it follows Prince Don Fabrizio Corbera and his family as political change threatens the old aristocratic order and a marriage could shape their future.
What is The Leopard about?
Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, is trying to protect his family’s standing as revolution and Italy’s unification reshape Sicilian society. His nephew Tancredi’s relationship with Angelica, the daughter of a newly wealthy local figure, offers a possible route into the emerging order. That prospect carries personal costs, especially for Concetta, whose place in the family’s future is bound up with the choice.

The series’ central tension is both political and intimate: how much can a family adapt to survive, and what does that adaptation ask of the people within it? Netflix’s synopsis and episode guide place the story in 1860 and foreground the Corbera family’s changing fortunes.

The novel and the Visconti film
The series adapts Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s novel The Leopard (also published as Il Gattopardo) and is a new screen interpretation, not a continuation of Luchino Visconti’s earlier film. The novel is a useful companion if you want to compare how the family and political story are shaped for the screen. Netflix’s adaptation context is discussed in Netflix Tudum’s series feature.
Netflix says filming took place in Palermo, Syracuse, Catania, and Rome, with Indiana Production and Moonage Pictures producing the series. The Italian launch context is covered in About Netflix’s account of the launch events.
