He said he was shifting his focus to Naughty Dog’s games and his studio leadership responsibilities. The series had already been renewed for season 3; in September 2025, Druckmann said Craig Mazin would be sole showrunner and described his own intended role as high-level.
What Neil Druckmann announced
In a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times on July 2, 2025, Druckmann said he had decided to “step away from my creative involvement” in the HBO adaptation. He made the announcement after work on season 2 was complete and before meaningful work on season 3 had begun.

Druckmann said he wanted to focus on Naughty Dog’s future projects, including writing and directing the game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as his responsibilities as the studio’s head and head of creative. He called co-creating the series a career highlight and said it had been an honor to work with Craig Mazin across the first two seasons.
Why he stepped back
Druckmann cited his competing responsibilities at Naughty Dog and the demands of television work. In a Variety interview published September 12, 2025, he described reconsidering his role as the season 3 writers’ room was about to begin. He spoke about the difficulty of co-showrunning while running a game studio and working on a game, and summarized his intended contribution as: “my job now is to stay very high level.”

He said he hoped to help keep the adaptation deeply faithful while allowing the rest of the team’s work to develop. The cited accounts document workload and priorities; they do not establish that his decision was caused by a dispute, creative conflict, or audience backlash.
Who is leading season 3?
Mazin is continuing as sole showrunner, according to Druckmann’s September 2025 interview. Druckmann’s July announcement described stepping away from creative involvement, while his later comments left room for a limited, high-level contribution. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe him simply as having no involvement at all.
Does Druckmann’s departure mean season 3 is canceled?
No. HBO announced a season 3 renewal on April 9, 2025, before Druckmann’s departure. HBO’s renewal announcement listed Mazin and Druckmann as writers and executive producers at that time. The sources cited here establish the renewal and Druckmann’s September 2025 account of the planned leadership arrangement; they do not establish a current filming schedule or release date.

Druckmann co-created the HBO series with Mazin and worked as a writer, executive producer, and director on its first two seasons, as described in the Los Angeles Times report. Season 2 continued the adaptation of The Last of Us Part II, the 2020 follow-up game. The Times reported that season 3’s story would continue from that game’s narrative, including Abby’s perspective.
