John Woo’s 2024 The Killer is a reimagining of his 1989 Hong Kong film, not a sequel or a remake of David Fincher’s 2023 movie of the same name. Its Paris-set story and action sequences offer a fresh frame for Woo’s familiar concerns, but the critical question is whether that frame gives the story enough character and emotional weight to stand alongside the original.
What is John Woo’s The Killer about?
Nathalie Emmanuel stars as Zee, an assassin known in Paris as the “Queen of the Dead.” When she refuses an assignment to kill a blind woman, her decision brings a police detective into the case and pulls her into a criminal conspiracy. The premise shifts the story into a new setting and centers Zee, while keeping the moral conflict of an assassin confronting the human consequences of her work. Universal Pictures’ film page describes the 2024 film as a radical reimagining of Woo’s 1989 movie.

Does the action deliver John Woo’s signature style?
The strongest case for the film is its action. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus recognizes Woo’s action bravura, and a Radio Times review excerpt displayed by the aggregator praises the style of the set pieces. For viewers drawn to Woo’s kinetic staging, the film provides flashes of the director’s familiar command of action.

But style alone does not answer the harder question: whether the action feels connected to a compelling character and story. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus argues that the kinetic set pieces do not make up for a lack of personality. An excerpt from FilmWeek/LAist critic Andy Klein similarly says the reimagining loses much of the original’s emotional weight. The divide is central to the film’s reception: the craft can register even when the drama around it feels less distinctive.
How does the 2024 film compare with the 1989 original?
Because Woo is revisiting his own film, this is not simply a new director’s interpretation of an established property. The change of setting and focus on Zee give the story a different point of entry, but that shift needs to create more than a new surface. The remake’s success depends on whether its altered perspective makes the central conflict feel newly personal—and whether the emotional stakes can hold their own beside the action.

The available critical response suggests a gap between those aims. Critics have praised the set pieces while questioning the film’s personality and emotional force. That does not make the 2024 film a scene-for-scene copy or settle how every viewer will judge it; it does explain why admiration for Woo’s action need not translate into equal affection for this reimagining.
What did critics and audiences think?
Rotten Tomatoes showed a 59% Tomatometer from 58 critic reviews and a 48% Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience ratings when accessed in 2026. These are changing aggregator snapshots, not fixed scores for the film. The critics’ consensus identifies action bravura as a strength and personality as a weakness; the displayed audience score is lower, but the aggregate alone does not explain individual viewers’ reactions. Where can you watch The Killer (2024)?
Peacock announced an exclusive streaming premiere for August 23, 2024, and its catalog lists the film for streaming. Peacock’s title page displays 4K UHD HDR and Dolby Vision badges; those are listing attributes, not an independent assessment of picture quality. Universal lists the film for digital purchase or rental. View Peacock’s current title listing or check Universal’s page for the available digital options.
Runtime listings differ slightly: Universal gives 2 hours 6 minutes, while Peacock lists 2 hours 5 minutes. Use the runtime shown by the service or edition you plan to watch.

Verdict: a striking action showcase with a harder emotional sell
The Killer is most persuasive when Woo’s action craft takes over. Its reimagined premise and Paris setting distinguish it from the 1989 film, but the divided response reflects a real trade-off: stylish set pieces do not automatically supply the personality or emotional weight viewers may want from a story revisited by its original director. It is a reasonable choice for Woo’s action, less certain as a replacement for the impact of his earlier film.
