Booker T and Batista really did fight backstage during a WWE SummerSlam commercial shoot in May 2006. WWE later described the dispute as a clash over respect and etiquette, and Batista acknowledged that he should have greeted Booker. But accounts differ on the fight’s exact sequence and who came out on top.
What happened between Booker T and Batista?
The altercation took place during a SummerSlam commercial shoot in May 2006, according to WWE’s retrospective account. A later report by Wrestling Inc., summarizing Booker T’s recollection, placed it on May 8 in Encino, California. That date and location come from Booker’s later account rather than a reconciled independent record.
In a contemporary report published May 10, 2006, Wrestling Inc. reproduced Batista’s comments to WWE.com. Batista said the issue had been “brewing for a long time.” The report said both men were swollen and bloodied and that several wrestlers separated them. Batista also said they would not be friends but would work together, and that he wanted to move on.
Why did Booker T and Batista fight?
Respect and etiquette are the clearest explanation in WWE’s retrospective. It says Batista’s 2007 autobiography, Batista Unleashed, acknowledged that he had failed to greet Booker. WWE reproduces Batista’s reflection: “… no matter how I felt, I should have at least been respectful and said ‘hello,’ not acted as if he didn’t exist.” He also concluded: “He’s earned respect in this business. I didn’t show it, and I was wrong.” These are passages from the book as quoted by WWE.

WWE also quotes Booker’s perspective on veteran wrestlers’ contributions: “There’s a lot of us who paved the way in this business for men like Batista.” Booker added: “Respect isn’t a right. It’s a privilege.” The comments frame the disagreement as more than a single missed greeting: Booker was emphasizing the regard he believed established wrestlers had earned.
Batista’s immediate public account was less conciliatory. As reproduced in the May 10, 2006 report, he said: “We will agree to disagree. We won’t be friends, but we will work together.” The report also quotes him denying that he had claimed to be WWE’s top-money draw or that he carried the company on his back.

Who won the backstage fight?
There is no settled answer. WWE’s retrospective says the upper hand is open to debate, while noting that the prevailing belief favored Booker. In the 2012 Wrestling Inc. report, Booker recalled Batista taking a “pretty good beating.” The same report says Finlay, who helped break up the altercation, had previously described the story as blown out of proportion. These are competing recollections, not a verified play-by-play.
WWE’s retrospective reported that the fight lasted at least five minutes, citing a day-of WWE.com report and the then-director of TV promotions. Wrestling Inc.’s 2012 account also gave an approximate five-minute duration. That length is a reported estimate, not an independently established timekeeping record.

Was the Booker T–Batista fight real?
Contemporary coverage described it as a real-life fight, and WWE’s later retrospective treated the altercation as an actual backstage incident rather than a staged match. What remains uncertain is the precise sequence and outcome: descriptions of who struck whom, how long it lasted, or who dominated should be attributed to the person or report making the claim.

The backstage altercation happened in May; their televised championship match came later at SummerSlam 2006. WWE’s official event record lists Batista against reigning World Heavyweight Champion King Booker. Batista won by disqualification after Sharmell interfered, so Booker retained the championship. The result documents what happened in the ring; it does not establish that the backstage fight caused or changed the booking.
