The Impossible True Story: How Accurate Is the Tsunami Movie?

The Impossible draws on María Belón’s real tsunami survival story, but its director aimed for plausibility, not documentary realism. Here’s what the film captures—and what its single-family focus omits.

The Impossible is based on María Belón and her family’s survival during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, but it is a dramatized feature film—not a documentary or a scene-by-scene record. Its accuracy is best judged in parts: the family story has a real basis, a Khao Lak survivor recognized aspects of the film, and the director prioritized plausibility and emotional experience. The movie’s focus on one European family also leaves most of the disaster’s immense human toll outside its frame.

Is The Impossible based on a true story?

Yes. Spain’s official film catalog describes a family on holiday in Khao Lak when the 2004 tsunami strikes, separating the mother and eldest son from the others; it also credits María Belón with the film’s original idea. The Guardian’s historical review identifies Belón’s real family as Spanish, while the movie recasts them as the English-speaking Bennett family. (Spain’s official film catalog; The Guardian)

That real-life foundation does not make every scene a verified reconstruction. The film tells the story through one family’s experience, and the available accounts do not establish every detail of each scene or settle all particulars of the family’s reunion.

How accurate is the film’s portrayal of the family’s experience?

The biographical starting point is real, and one other person who survived the tsunami in Khao Lak recognized important elements. Simon Jenkins wrote in The Guardian, “The story depicted in the movie was incredibly similar to my own.” He recalled similarities involving the beach and hospital, and described Thai people helping survivors. His testimony supports those aspects of the setting and response as he experienced them; it cannot verify every scene or stand in for every survivor’s account. (The Guardian)

The Impossible [Blu-ray]
  • From Summit Entertainment. A powerful story based on one family's survival of the 2004 tsunami, THE IMPOSSIBLE stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor and is directed by J.A. Bayona (THE ORPHANAGE). Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the fami

Director J. A. Bayona described the goal as verisimilitude rather than strict realism: “No se trataba de ser realista sino verosímil”—translated as, “It was not about being realistic but plausible.” He said the family was a way to put a face to the tragedy and that the film focused on what María and her family experienced and did. That stated aim is a useful guide: a scene can convey a plausible, emotionally grounded experience without being a literal record. (Telecinco interview with Bayona)

Does the tsunami look and behave accurately?

NOAA describes a tsunami as a series of waves generated by sudden displacement of ocean water. It can produce dangerous coastal flooding and powerful currents that persist for hours or days. This is different from treating a tsunami as simply one breaking surf wave, and it helps explain the continuing danger after the first surge. NOAA’s description provides scientific context; it does not verify the film’s exact wave height, timing, or staging. (NOAA tsunami explainer)

What does the movie leave out about the 2004 tsunami?

The film follows one family in Khao Lak, while the disaster struck coastlines across the Indian Ocean region. NOAA reports that the event killed just over a quarter million people and displaced 1.7 million. Those are NOAA’s figures for the wider disaster, not Thailand alone; estimates can vary with sources and counting methods. (NOAA tsunami explainer)

The movie’s narrow perspective has drawn criticism. The Guardian’s reviewer argued that centering a European family gave limited meaningful acknowledgment to the predominantly Asian victims. Jenkins’s separate testimony emphasizes Thai assistance he witnessed. These perspectives address different aspects of the film: one questions whose suffering receives attention, while the other recalls local help represented in the story. Neither settles every question about the film’s depiction of the disaster or its affected communities. (The Guardian)

How should you judge The Impossible’s accuracy?

  • Family story: rooted in María Belón’s real experience, though the film changes the family’s presentation and dramatizes events.
  • Realism: the director described plausibility and emotional experience—not strict documentary realism—as the aim.
  • Witness corroboration: one Khao Lak survivor recognized aspects of the beach, hospital, and Thai assistance, but his account is personal rather than universal.
  • Disaster scale: the family’s story is only a small part of a catastrophe that affected coastlines across the Indian Ocean region.
  • Representation: the choice to center a European family can be assessed separately from whether particular scenes feel convincing.
