The Hulk did not begin as the green giant most readers picture. Bruce Banner first transformed into a gray-skinned Hulk in The Incredible Hulk #1, published in May 1962. Green became the familiar look in the early issues; later, gray returned as the identity of Joe Fixit, while Red Hulk emerged as a separate character: General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. These colors mark different points in Marvel’s publication history and different story identities—not simply a sequence of costume changes.
Why was the original Hulk gray?
Marvel’s first Hulk appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1 in May 1962. Writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby introduced Bruce Banner’s transformation as a gray-skinned giant. Marvel’s description of the original six issues says the Hulk began gray before turning the familiar shade of green.
That publication history establishes the order of the colors, but it does not by itself explain the production or printing decisions behind the change. The important point for readers is that gray is not a later invention: it was the Hulk’s first published appearance.
How green became the familiar Hulk color
In the early run of the original solo series, the Hulk changed from gray to green. Green became the character’s signature look, and it is the shade most closely associated with Bruce Banner’s transformations. Marvel’s Masterworks listing summarizes the first six issues as moving from the gray giant to the familiar green Hulk.
Gray returned as Joe Fixit
Marvel later used gray for more than a visual callback. In writer Peter David’s run, a gray Hulk returned with the language skills of the original version and developed into Joe Fixit, a sly, cynical persona associated with Las Vegas. The stories used this version to explore Banner’s divided identity rather than presenting gray as a simple change in appearance.
Marvel’s retrospective quotes Eduardo de Salazar describing the relationship this way: “the Hulk and Banner seem like different people, but they are actually aspects of the same person.” In that context, gray helps distinguish a particular expression of Banner’s complicated personality from the familiar green Hulk.
Red Hulk is General Ross, not Bruce Banner in a new shade
Red Hulk is a distinct character identity. Marvel identifies him as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, Banner’s longtime military antagonist. Ross had appeared alongside Banner in The Incredible Hulk #1, decades before he became Red Hulk.
Marvel’s reading guide identifies Hulk (2008) #1 as Red Hulk’s debut and points to #23 for the story detailing Ross’s transformation and motives. A separate Marvel chronology says Ross’s identity was revealed in Incredible Hulk #600. These references describe different story beats and use different series labels, so they should not be compressed into a claim that the debut and identity reveal happened in the same issue.

What the main Hulk colors mean
| Color and story identity | Relevant appearance or milestone | Who it is | What the color signifies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gray, original Hulk | The Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962) | Bruce Banner transformed | The Hulk’s first published appearance, before green became familiar. |
| Green Hulk | Early issues of the original The Incredible Hulk series; Marvel’s first-six-issues summary traces the shift from gray to green. | Bruce Banner transformed | The character’s signature, widely recognized appearance. |
| Gray Hulk / Joe Fixit | Peter David’s run; Marvel’s retrospective describes the gray persona and its later Joe Fixit identity. | A distinct persona of Banner’s Hulk | A more calculating, sly character used to explore Banner’s divided identity. |
| Red Hulk | Hulk (2008) #1 is identified by Marvel as the debut; #23 is cited for Ross’s transformation and motives. | General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross | A separate character identity, not Bruce Banner simply changing color. |
Does Marvel have a Hulk of every color?
“Every color” is an evocative headline, not a complete catalog established by these examples. The documented history here covers gray, green, and red, including two distinct uses of gray. A truly exhaustive roster would need to define whether it includes alternate realities, temporary transformations, spin-offs, and other gamma-powered characters; those categories are not covered by the publication-history references cited here.
For a wider look at the character’s publication history, Marvel’s 2023 article discusses HULK: THE FIRST 60 YEARS, a Titan Books title that went on sale June 27, 2023. It is a broad Hulk-history book, not a dedicated guide to every color variant.
