Football’s impact on UK culture reaches beyond the pitch: it has helped shape community belonging, turned shirts and terrace wear into expressions of identity, and intersected with music and youth scenes. The clearest documented examples span different places and periods, so they are best understood as connected local histories—not one story that represents every nation, club or genre.
Football as a place to belong
Football culture is made in more places than stadiums. London Museum’s Finding Home in Football, a project with the Cambridge Heritage Research Centre, describes how stadiums, pubs, community centres, parks and grassroots pitches can become places where people build identity, memory and connection. Its focus is London, rather than a quantified picture of the whole UK.
Shared rituals and relationships are part of that experience. Caz Ulley, quoted by London Museum from Hackney Women’s Football Club – 30 Years and Counting (2016), put the social value this way: “More than just the football. It’s about a group of people who look after each other through the good times and the bad, on the pitch and off it”.
How football shirts became cultural objects
A club shirt can signal allegiance, memory and personal style as well as serve as match kit. In 2019, the National Football Museum’s exhibition STRIP! How Football Got Shirty traced the shirt’s development from functional clothing to an object of desire, exploring its links with design, fashion and technology. The exhibition displayed well over 200 shirts; that figure describes the exhibition, not how many people collect shirts or how common collecting is.

- The ultimate non-sports fan t-shirt, for those who need one shirt to cover all the sports - sure to be a hit at whatever baseball, softball, football, soccer, foosball game you attend.
- For the person invited to the game, but has no idea how the game is played. Vintage school , athletic, gym shirt, style lettering with distressed look.

That shift helps explain why shirts are often valued beyond their use on the field: a design can carry a club’s visual identity and evoke a particular era. But an old-looking shirt or a retro design is not automatically an authentic historical garment; its provenance needs to be checked separately.
Terrace casual style: clothing, place and identity
Terrace casual culture is associated with supporters adopting branded European sportswear and designer clothing. Liverpool John Moores University’s account of the 2022 exhibition Art of the Terraces locates its origins among football fans in northwest England in the late 1970s, while academic accounts examine how the style developed within Britain’s wider social changes of the 1980s.

The clothing mattered as a way to present identity and affiliation, not merely as a uniform. Research on casual culture considers how sportswear and designer labels became part of a distinctive supporter style and social life. It is more accurate to describe a movement with a particular regional history than to assign its invention to one club or person.
The history also cannot be reduced to fashion alone or told as a simple story of violence. Ben Jones’s study of football hooligan autobiographies examines popular memory, working-class men and racialised masculinities in deindustrialising Britain from the 1970s to the 1990s. That perspective is a reminder that later recollections and familiar narratives need historical context.

Where football scenes met music and fanzines
The links between football and music are documented through specific scenes, not as evidence that football caused UK music as a whole. A 2023 article in Twentieth Century British History examines football casuals, fanzines and acid house in 1980s and 1990s England. It places supporter style and self-expression in a wider landscape of working-class subcultures and social life.
A separate Glasgow School of Art study focuses on David Bowie’s influence on Liverpool FC casuals between 1976 and 1979. Its case study describes cultural exchange among music, sport, film and fashion. Together, these accounts show that football supporters could draw on musical and visual culture as they shaped a look and a sense of belonging; they do not establish a single, nationwide pattern.

Why there is no single UK football-culture story
These examples differ in place, period and evidence. London Museum’s work foregrounds community experience in London; the casual-style histories focus substantially on northwest England and English scenes from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Museum exhibitions interpret objects and their cultural afterlives, academic studies examine particular histories, and participant testimony offers a personal account. None should be stretched into a claim about every UK nation, club or musical scene.
Taken together, the evidence shows football acting as a meeting point: a source of community ties, a subject expressed through clothing, and one strand in the cultural exchanges linking supporters with music and youth scenes.
