Taylor Swift’s “marjorie” is about her maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, an opera singer. The song’s connection to Finlay is audible as well as personal: Swift’s mother found old recordings of her singing, and producer Aaron Dessner incorporated some of her vocals into the track.
Who was Marjorie Finlay?
Marjorie Finlay was Taylor Swift’s maternal grandmother and a singer who performed opera. Swift has described “marjorie” as a song starring her grandmother, whom she said still visits her sometimes in dreams. Elle reported Swift’s description ahead of the album’s release.

“marjorie” is track 13 on Swift’s 2020 album evermore. The album’s track listing places it among the record’s songs.
How Finlay’s voice became part of the song
Swift’s mother found old vinyl recordings of Finlay singing and sent them to producer Aaron Dessner, who incorporated some of her vocals into “marjorie,” according to GRAMMY.com’s account of Swift’s conversation with Zane Lowe. Elle also reported that Finlay is credited with background vocals in the lyric video credits.

That choice makes the song’s subject part of its sound: Finlay is not only remembered through the lyrics, but heard in the recording. The official lyric video’s family photographs add another visual link to Swift’s family history.

The song holds on to small details and remembered guidance while acknowledging what Swift did not know to ask when she was young. Speaking to Zane Lowe, she recalled seeing beautiful dresses in her grandmother’s closet and wishing she had asked where Finlay wore them: “I’d open up my grandmother’s closet and she had beautiful dresses from the ’60s, I wish I’d asked her where she wore every single one of them.”

GRAMMY.com connects that regret to Swift’s lack of perspective as a child: she had not thought to ask her grandmother about her life and singing career. Read in that light, the song’s attention to inherited advice and ordinary moments gives its grief a particular shape—not just missing someone, but recognizing how much of their story remains unknown.
Grief, family memory, and legacy are useful ways to read “marjorie,” rather than additional claims about Swift’s stated intent. The recorded vocals make that reading especially tangible: a family member’s voice survives inside a song about remembering her.
