What this ranking counts—and what it does not
“Woody Allen movies” can mean films he directed, wrote, acted in, or contributed to as one part of an anthology. To make the comparison consistent, this ranking uses director credit for feature films; it does not mix in actor-only or writer-only credits, or anthology segments as if they were separately directed features. Allen’s official filmography lists his films and roles, including Rifkin’s Festival (2020), A Rainy Day in New York (2019), and Coup de Chance (2023).

The Numbers describes its database as compiling film-business information from studios, retailers, news reports, and other sources. Its reported grosses are useful for comparison, but the figures are not an independently audited accounting of receipts for every release. Box-office gross is also not a measure of a film’s production costs, marketing spend, or profitability.
Why other “top Woody Allen movies” lists differ
A ranking can change substantially depending on whether it measures worldwide or domestic gross and whether it adjusts older ticket sales for inflation. An older CBS News list published on August 5, 2013, based on Box Office Mojo, ranked films using inflation-adjusted domestic grosses—not current worldwide nominal totals.
| CBS News’ 2013 domestic ranking | Inflation-adjusted domestic gross | Unadjusted domestic gross |
|---|---|---|
| Annie Hall | $139.97 million | $38.25 million |
| Manhattan | $129.87 million | $39.95 million |
| Hannah and Her Sisters | $87.64 million | $40.08 million |
| Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex… | $86.48 million | $18.02 million |
| Sleeper | $84.57 million | $18.34 million |
Those figures are the historical comparison CBS attributed to Box Office Mojo; they should not be read as worldwide totals. The difference is especially clear with Annie Hall: The Numbers reports $38,257,191 worldwide in nominal dollars and $194,001,618 as its inflation-adjusted domestic gross. The geography and price basis differ, so those two figures are not competing estimates of the same measure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the ranking
- Worldwide versus domestic: Worldwide gross includes reported international receipts as well as domestic receipts; the two are not interchangeable.
- Nominal versus inflation-adjusted: Nominal grosses are reported dollars from their release era. Inflation adjustment attempts to express older grosses in later purchasing-power terms, but rankings depend on the adjustment method.
- Database snapshot: Totals can change as a database adds territory reports or re-release figures. The Numbers totals cited here were accessed in 2026.
- Gross versus earnings: A box-office gross is ticket revenue before the many costs and revenue splits that determine what a film ultimately earns.
Because a complete, consistent worldwide total for every Allen-directed feature is not established in the available figures, the three entries above are the verified leaders here—not a definitive all-film ranking.
