The sources mix domestic franchise totals with worldwide grosses for individual films, and they do not establish one consistent method for counting spin-offs, re-releases, or event screenings. Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter / Fantastic Beasts, and James Bond are major contenders, but an exact worldwide order or top-ten total cannot be verified from these records alone.
What is the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time?
The answer depends on what you count. Box Office Mojo’s franchise index labels its figures “US & Canada,” so it can support a domestic comparison, not a worldwide ranking. The Numbers provides worldwide grosses for individual films and franchise catalogs, but the cited pages do not supply a unified worldwide leaderboard using consistent franchise boundaries. Box Office Mojo’s franchise index and The Numbers’ franchise pages therefore answer different questions.
Among the clear contenders are the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Harry Potter / Fantastic Beasts, and James Bond. The available data supports treating them as major franchises, but not declaring one the worldwide leader or assigning them a definitive order.
Why franchise rankings are difficult to compare
Domestic and worldwide grosses are different measures
A US-and-Canada franchise total cannot be compared directly with a worldwide total. Box Office Mojo’s franchise table is explicitly domestic. The Numbers’ cited examples are worldwide grosses for specific films, not comparable cumulative totals across every franchise.
Franchise boundaries change the total
There is no self-evident rule for whether a franchise total includes spin-offs, crossovers, re-releases, or special event screenings. The Numbers’ Harry Potter catalog groups the main series with Fantastic Beasts and lists a Harry Potter IMAX marathon. Those choices affect what the catalog represents; a total is meaningful only when its inclusion rules are clear. The Numbers’ Harry Potter franchise page illustrates the issue.
Individual-film lists do not establish franchise totals
An all-time chart of individual movies can show that franchise films are among the biggest releases, but it does not tell you how to aggregate them into a franchise ranking. Films should be added only when membership and release-type rules are consistent. The Numbers’ worldwide all-time chart lists movies, not a franchise leaderboard.

New releases and re-releases move the numbers
Box-office totals are time-sensitive. The Numbers’ Star Wars page includes the 2026 release The Mandalorian and Grogu, so a franchise comparison can change as new films arrive or older titles return to theaters. Any ranking should state when figures were checked. The Numbers’ Star Wars page is a live catalog.
What the available film grosses can tell you
The Numbers lists worldwide grosses of $2,056,046,835 for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and $1,322,581,071 for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. For James Bond, it lists $1,110,526,981 for Skyfall and $758,929,771 for No Time to Die. These are individual-film database figures accessed in 2026; they are not franchise totals or proof of either franchise’s position in a worldwide ranking. Star Wars figures; James Bond figures.

The Numbers also has an MCU page, but its returned catalog includes future placeholders without earned grosses. Those entries must be excluded from any cumulative calculation. The Numbers’ MCU page should not be treated as a verified all-time total without checking that every included entry has an actual gross.
Does the ranking include spin-offs?
It should say so explicitly. A comparison that counts only a core series will differ from one that adds related spin-offs or special screenings. For example, The Numbers groups Fantastic Beasts with Harry Potter and lists an IMAX marathon. Without a consistent boundary applied to every contender, adding individual titles together can create a misleading result.

Are box-office totals adjusted for inflation?
The film figures cited here are nominal dollar grosses; the available sources do not provide a consistent inflation-adjusted ranking across franchises. Nominal box office measures revenue at the time of release, not how many tickets were sold or how many people watched. Inflation-adjusted figures answer a different question and require a consistent method across all films and territories.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a reliable worldwide ranking would need
- A declared geographic scope, such as worldwide theatrical grosses or US-and-Canada grosses, kept separate from other markets.
- A consistent franchise boundary covering the same kinds of spin-offs, crossovers, re-releases, and event screenings for every contender.
- A clear choice between nominal dollars and inflation-adjusted figures.
- A dated, complete film catalog with actual grosses only, so future placeholders are not counted.
Until those criteria are met with comparable data, the responsible conclusion is that the named franchises are leading contenders, not that one has a verified worldwide crown.
