The Great Flood is a 2025 South Korean Netflix film about an AI researcher and her young son trying to survive a catastrophic flood in near-future Seoul. It begins as a disaster-survival story, but science-fiction mystery and an emotional story about love are central to its design. Kim Da-mi, Park Hae-soo and Kwon Eun-seong star.
What is The Great Flood about?
A worldwide flood engulfs Seoul and traps AI researcher Gu An-na and her young son, Shin Za-in, in their apartment building. As the water rises, An-na tries to reach Za-in and keep him safe. Security agent Son Hee-jo arrives with a mission connected to humanity’s future, and An-na begins to question what he wants from her.

That setup is the spoiler-light version: a mother and child facing an immediate survival crisis, with a larger mystery behind the mission. Netflix’s official synopsis frames their escape as consequential for humanity’s future, while its Tudum feature describes An-na climbing through the flooded building, becoming separated from Za-in and joining Hee-jo to search for him.
Is it a disaster film or science fiction?
It is both, with drama and action also in the mix. Netflix categorizes the film as sci-fi, drama and action, and tags it “Time Loop.” Those are Netflix’s catalog labels, not a guarantee that it follows the conventions of a straightforward flood-survival movie. Director Kim Byung-woo described disaster and science-fiction elements as woven together so viewers could experience what both genres offer.

- Over the course of one evening, an unsuspecting group of twenty-somethings find themselves bombarded by a series of natural disasters and catastrophic events.
Kim’s comments point to the film’s emotional center as well as its genre blend. At a December 16, 2025 press conference, he said the question that had stayed with him was: “What is love and where does it come from?” He also said he wanted the visuals and action to convey emotion rather than make the film “just another disaster film.” These are the director’s stated intentions; whether the balance works for an individual viewer is a matter of taste.

Netflix’s Tudum cast-and-plot feature identifies the three lead characters and performers. At the film’s press conference, Kim Da-mi said the maternal-love aspect made accepting the role difficult and that she focused on An-na’s transformation and discovery of her love for her son. Park Hae-soo said the screenplay differed from an ordinary disaster movie and that its three-protagonist structure interested him.
Who made the film, and when did it come out?
The Great Flood (Korean title: 대홍수) was written and directed by Kim Byung-woo, produced by Hwansang Studio Seoul and presented by Netflix. Netflix’s final release announcement credits Kim as writer and director; an earlier Korean slate announcement also credited Han Ji-su on the screenplay. The film premiered in the Korean Cinema Today section at the 30th Busan International Film Festival in September 2025.
Netflix announced its streaming release for December 19, 2025. Netflix Tudum lists the runtime as 1 hour 49 minutes and describes the setting as near-future Seoul.

Expect the flood and the effort to find Za-in to drive the immediate action, but allow for a shift into science-fiction questions around Hee-jo’s mission and the future of humanity. The film may suit viewers interested in Korean-language performances, disaster spectacle and a story that makes maternal attachment part of its speculative premise. Viewers looking only for a conventional, continuously escalating disaster plot may find the genre shift significant.

Netflix’s “Time Loop” tag signals a science-fiction angle, but the catalog label alone does not establish the film’s exact mechanics or explain its ending. This guide avoids an ending interpretation; viewers who want one should watch the film rather than infer plot details from the tag.
