The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) is most rewarding when Vijay is on screen playing off himself. His dual performance and the film’s fan-service callbacks give it energy, but a familiar, foreseeable story and a runtime of about three hours keep it from matching its star spectacle with equal narrative force. It is a better fit for committed Vijay fans than for viewers looking first for a fresh, tightly plotted thriller.
What is The Greatest of All Time about?
Directed by Venkat Prabhu, this 2024 Tamil-led action thriller follows MS Gandhi, played by Vijay, a former Special Anti-Terrorist Squad officer. After a 17-year gap, Gandhi encounters his long-lost son Jeevan, also played by Vijay. That setup puts the film’s central attraction in plain view: two versions of its leading star sharing the story. The details beyond that premise are best left unspoiled.

The Times of India lists the release date as 5 September 2024 and credits Vijay, Prashanth, Prabhudeva, Ajmal Ameer, Jayaram, Sneha, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Yogi Babu and Mohan among the cast. India Today identifies Yuvan Shankar Raja as composer. The Times of India describes the film as 183 minutes long; Rotten Tomatoes lists 180 minutes.
Does Vijay’s dual performance carry the film?
It supplies the strongest reason to watch. Sridevi S’s Times of India review praises Vijay in both roles and the face-offs between older and younger versions of him. Those encounters turn the casting conceit into the film’s main spectacle: the appeal lies not just in seeing Vijay twice, but in watching the two screen personas collide.

The film also makes room for nostalgic references and familiar fan callbacks. They can add a second layer of fun for viewers who recognize them, though that pleasure depends on the viewer’s connection to Vijay’s screen history. The callbacks reinforce the sense that GOAT is designed as a star-centered celebration.
Does the story match the spectacle?
Not consistently. The Times of India review praises the star moments but finds the story familiar and predictable. It also describes the action as average and the songs as uneven. Those criticisms point to the central trade-off: the film has a strong organizing idea in Vijay’s dual role, but the surrounding plot does not offer the same degree of surprise.

That is why “A Vijay show and not much else” works as a critical argument, rather than a universal verdict. Scroll Staff used that phrase in a review excerpt reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes on 17 September 2024. It captures the film’s priorities: the star performance and fan-facing moments are the draw, while the screenplay gives viewers less to hold on to once the novelty of the setup has done its work.
Who is likely to enjoy GOAT?
| What you want from the film | How well GOAT fits |
|---|---|
| Vijay’s screen presence and a dual role | Strong fit: Vijay’s two performances and their face-offs are the main attractions identified in the Times of India review. |
| Callbacks and fan-oriented moments | Good fit if you enjoy references to Vijay’s screen history; their appeal depends on recognizing and valuing them. |
| A novel, unpredictable plot | More reservations: the Times of India review calls the story familiar and predictable. |
| A brisk watch | Poor fit: listings put the runtime at three hours (Rotten Tomatoes) or 183 minutes (The Times of India). |
In her 3/5 review for The Times of India, Sridevi S sums up the divide between fan appeal and broader storytelling with this line: “Endless fan moments, all mass and no solid substance makes GOAT an average watch for the film lovers, and a celebrated watch for his hard-core fans.” That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a measure of how every viewer will respond.

What did critics and viewers think?
Reception is mixed in the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed on 8 October 2026: the page displayed a 40% Tomatometer from 10 critic reviews and a 62% Popcornmeter from 100+ verified ratings. These are changing aggregator figures from limited counts, not a representative survey or a permanent verdict. The range reflects the film’s split appeal: critics have praised the Vijay-centered fan celebration while also criticizing its narrative.
