In an Associated Press interview published February 9, 2026, Sean Astin said Steven Spielberg is the “decider” and could support moving forward if a sequel recaptured the original film’s whimsy and magic. That leaves the project’s future conditional—and the original cast’s involvement unsettled.
What Sean Astin said about the sequel
Astin, who is also SAG-AFTRA president, told the Associated Press: “Steven Spielberg is the decider.” He added: “So if it captures the whimsy and the magic, then I can see him and Chris Columbus, who’s really driving the effort, going forward with it.” His comments describe a condition for moving ahead, not confirmation that the film has been greenlit for production. Development and cast participation are separate questions
Warner Bros. had announced a sequel earlier in 2025, according to The Guardian’s June 4, 2025 anniversary feature. But reports about a project in development do not establish that production is underway, and they do not establish that the original actors are attached.
In a 2025 interview with Today, Corey Feldman put the distinction plainly: “They’re doing [the sequel]. Whether we’re doing it or not is another story.” Parade reported that no original cast members had officially been asked at that time, and that there was no announced story or release date. Those details describe the reporting at the time; they should not be treated as a current official production update. Read Parade’s account.

What the original cast has said about returning
Sean Astin expected the original cast might be left out
In The Guardian’s June 2025 feature, Astin said: “I would expect that it would not include us. Maybe it’s just my desire not to raise my expectations. I root for it on behalf of the fans who love it.” That was his expectation then, not a confirmed casting decision—and it preceded his February 2026 comments about Spielberg’s role.
Kerri Green thought cameos might be possible
Green told The Guardian that after a recent conversation with Chris Columbus, “It sounds like we all might have cameos in it, which would be so much fun.” She was describing her understanding of that conversation, not an official announcement that the cast would appear.

Josh Brolin recalled earlier scripts
In August 2025 coverage, Brolin said: “I think there’s been five scripts so far through the years, and he hasn’t approved anything yet.” He hoped a sequel would happen but also worried it could affect his memory of the original. That is his reported view from 2025, not confirmation of the sequel’s present script status. Read the August 2025 report.
Why an earlier pitch did not move forward
Feldman described a past pitch he and Astin took to director Richard Donner. A February 2025 report by CNA says Donner did not take it forward because he considered it too expensive. That account concerns an earlier proposal; it does not settle the status of the more recently reported sequel. In the same report, Ke Huy Quan said he would love to make a sequel. Read CNA’s report.

What is—and is not—confirmed
- Spielberg’s approval matters: Astin’s February 2026 comments make the sequel’s ability to recapture the original’s spirit a key condition for going forward.
- The original cast has no confirmed reunion: Cast members have expressed different expectations, and the cited reporting does not establish that any are attached.
- No release date or finalized story is established by the cited 2025 coverage: Do not mistake that dated reporting for a current announcement.
- “The cast says it isn’t happening” overstates the evidence: The comments reflect uncertainty about approval and participation, not a collective rejection.
