Joan Vassos made her Golden Bachelorette fantasy suites about private conversation, not sex or sleeping together. She said she asked for rooms without beds and left before the night was over, using the time to discuss whether a future together could work. Those were her personal boundaries—not a test that automatically exposed a man as a red flag.
Why Vassos changed the fantasy-suite format for herself
In a September 17, 2024 interview with Parade, Vassos said she valued the opportunity to talk privately, away from the cameras, but did not want a physical relationship with more than one person. “I saw a value in having a fantasy suite—you really do need to have those off-camera conversations, but I just took [sex] off the table,” she said.
She described the choice as personal: “I decided almost even before I went on The [Golden] Bachelorette that fantasy suites needed to be like my own personal version of them, that I didn’t feel comfortable having a physical relationship with more than one person and so, my fantasy suites were really more about emotional intimacy than physical.” She did not argue that sex or conventional overnight dates are wrong; she set a boundary that suited her.
What “no beds in the room” meant
On Kaitlyn Bristowe’s Off the Vine podcast, as recounted by Cosmopolitan on October 30, 2024, Vassos said she told the men, “I don’t want any beds in the room.” She explained that they left before sleeping and spent the time sitting together and talking.

Her reasons included her own comfort: she did not want to wake up beside someone she felt she had not spent much time with. She also considered how a future partner might feel about her having slept with other contestants. These were her concerns, not evidence that the men had done anything wrong.
What she wanted to learn in private conversations
Vassos used the unfilmed time to explore practical questions about a shared life. In a TheWrap interview published October 30, 2024, she said they discussed children and grandchildren, parents, finances, and home life. “We got to talk about what life would be like together and and even the difficult things — how you figure out kids and grandkids and parents and all of those things,” she said.

That approach also fit advice she said she had received about the show: avoid choosing one person too early, give the contestants equal chances, and do not make decisions based only on initial physical attraction. Private conversation gave her another way to consider compatibility beyond chemistry.
Pascal Ibgui’s departure was a mismatch, not a diagnosis
One conversation ended with Pascal Ibgui leaving during his fantasy-suite date. Vassos described a Tahitian bonding ceremony in which they shared fears. Ibgui found the exercise uncomfortable and ended the relationship during the date. Vassos said she was hurt, but did not want him to talk himself into a relationship. As she put it to TheWrap, “You either feel it or don’t.”

The episode illustrates that a revealing conversation can clarify whether two people are a fit; it does not make discomfort or a decision to leave proof of bad character. Vassos’s account framed the departure as painful but preferable to a relationship someone did not genuinely want.

Those preferences should be read as her own criteria for a partner, rather than a universal checklist or a claim that any contestant failed it. In the same interview, she described dating-app messaging as burdensome and said some dates misrepresented themselves in profiles—experiences that help explain why direct conversation and observing how someone treats others mattered to her.
