The Gorge Review: Apple’s Sci-Fi Movies Lag Its Best Shows

The Gorge has a strong premise and engaging leads, but critics found its romance, creature horror and action an uneven mix. Its 2025 reception supports a limited comparison with Apple’s stronger-performing series, not a blanket rule.

The Gorge has an arresting premise and an appealing central pairing, but its jumps between romance, science-fiction horror and action do not fully cohere. That makes it a useful test of the claim that Apple’s sci-fi movies trail its shows: a June 2025 comparison supported that view for a limited slate, not as a rule about every film and series.

What is The Gorge about?

Released February 14, 2025, The Gorge stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as highly trained operatives assigned to guard towers on opposite sides of a classified gorge. They begin to bond while watching for an unseen threat; when it emerges, they have to work together. Scott Derrickson directed, and Sigourney Weaver is also in the cast. Apple’s official film information describes the setup as a thriller.

Apple TV lists the movie as a thriller/action title, with a runtime of 2 hours 7 minutes and a PG-13 rating for intense action and violence, brief strong language, suggestive material and thematic elements. Apple TV’s U.S. listing is the place to check current viewing availability and terms.

Does the genre mix work?

The movie’s central gamble is that espionage suspense, romance and creature-feature horror can coexist in one story. The setup gives it an immediate hook, and the lead pairing helps ground the early connection between the guards. But the transitions between moods and kinds of danger are also where the film drew criticism.

The performances and premise

Associated Press critic Jake Coyle praised the visual polish and chemistry between Teller and Taylor-Joy, even while giving the film one and a half stars out of four. His review calls it an “intriguing but empty genre mash-up,” arguing that tonal swings and surface gloss undermine the promising concept. Read Coyle’s Associated Press review.

The story’s familiar turns

A.V. Club critic Brianna Zigler similarly sees potential in the premise but finds the story predictable and its creature and production-design ideas familiar. Zigler regards the romance as giving the leads a simple sweetness, while arguing that the film does not make enough of its setup. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Read Zigler’s review.

For viewers, the practical trade-off is straightforward: the high-concept setup, polished creature action and Teller–Taylor-Joy pairing may be enough to carry the ride, but the genre shifts and story logic may frustrate anyone looking for a consistently paced or especially surprising film.

Are Apple’s sci-fi movies behind its shows?

As a judgment about the Apple releases available in 2025, the claim has support—but it is not an objective law of the catalog. In a June 19, 2025 comparison, TechRadar’s Amelia Schwanke argued that Apple TV+’s three new films released by then had not reached the level of its hit series. The article reported Rotten Tomatoes scores at that time of 63% for The Gorge and 95% for Severance season 2. Those are dated score snapshots, not current or permanent ratings. Read Schwanke’s comparison.

The comparison also makes sense as a question of format. A feature such as The Gorge has to fit its romance, suspense and monster action into a little over two hours. A serialized show has more room to develop characters and build a world across episodes and seasons, though that room can come with slower pacing or a greater demand on viewers’ attention.

What a science-fiction series can do differently

Foundation illustrates both sides of that contrast. Reviewing season 3, A.V. Club’s John DeVore described the series as weighty and ambitious, while warning that its many characters and broad scope may overwhelm casual viewers. Its scale offers space for extended worldbuilding; it does not prove that series are inherently better than films. Read DeVore’s season 3 review.

So the title’s comparison is most persuasive when kept narrow: some Apple series have achieved stronger critical reception and broader narrative scope than the 2025 film slate cited by TechRadar. That evidence does not establish that every Apple sci-fi movie is weaker than every Apple show.

Should you watch The Gorge?

Watch it if a strange premise, creature action and the chemistry of its two leads appeal more than a perfectly even blend of genres. Go in expecting a film that reviewers found visually polished but uneven, with predictable turns and a romance that may feel slight beside the horror and action. Apple TV’s U.S. listing provides the official streaming option; its availability and subscription terms can change.
