The first look at Star Wars: Skeleton Crew introduced four children lost in a strange, dangerous galaxy and trying to find their way home. Its adventure is framed through their curiosity and point of view: the wider galaxy is thrilling to explore, but it can also be perilous. The series’ original announced Disney+ premiere date was December 3, 2024.
What did the first look reveal?
In the July 31, 2024 first-look coverage, a mysterious discovery on the children’s home planet sets an unintended journey across the galaxy in motion. The official StarWars.com announcement describes the central predicament: the children are lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy, searching for a way home while encountering figures who may be allies or enemies.
That setup makes the scale of the galaxy personal. Rather than beginning with experienced heroes who already know how to navigate it, the story follows children meeting a much larger world for the first time.
Who are the children and their companions?
- Wim, played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers
- Fern, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong
- KB, played by Kyriana Kratter
- Neel, played by Robert Timothy Smith
The first look also features Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood. The children’s reluctant helper is SM-33, voiced by Nick Frost: a rusty droid who serves as first mate of the ship Onyx Cinder.

Why is the adventure described as childlike?
“At its core it’s a story about wanting to explore a world that’s bigger than your own,” co-creator and co-showrunner Jon Watts said in the official announcement. That idea explains the child-centered framing: the galaxy is not just a familiar setting for another mission, but a vast place the young characters are encountering with wonder, uncertainty, and limited experience.
The tone is not presented as carefree. The children face danger as they try to get home, so playful discovery sits alongside the risk of being far from safety. Co-creator and co-showrunner Christopher Ford said, “And setting a new group of characters off on their first adventure is fascinating, especially getting to see how they will grow over time.” Their first journey is therefore also a coming-of-age premise: the adventure tests them and gives them room to change.
