Several independent artists and bands—including Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Chad VanGaalen, Sunnsetter, Fiver and The Highest Order—announced or carried out Spotify withdrawals in 2025. Their reasons included objections to co-founder Daniel Ek’s reported investment in military AI company Helsing, criticism of streaming economics and personal ethical judgments. This is a documented set of departures, not a verified count of a coordinated or comprehensive exodus.
Which artists have left Spotify?
Reports from summer 2025 document a range of decisions, from announced plans to removals described as complete. The status matters: label arrangements and contractual processes can delay a withdrawal, so an announcement does not necessarily mean every recording has disappeared.
| Artist | Reported status | Reason or listener alternative noted in reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Deerhoof | Announced its withdrawal in late June 2025; removal could involve delays. | Objected to the connection between its music and AI battle technology. The band said touring income made leaving more feasible for it than for some artists. |
| Fiver and The Highest Order | Simone Schmidt announced the groups would take down their catalogs; the report describes a process, not immediate removal of every track. | The announcement was part of the artists’ objections to Spotify’s association with the reported Helsing investment. |
| Chad VanGaalen | Said he had removed his music; Billboard Canada reported that Sub Pop and Flemish Eye carried out the catalog removal. | VanGaalen said his discography was available on Bandcamp for free. |
| Sunnsetter | Announced a decision to withdraw; Paper Bag Records supported it. | The withdrawal was reported amid objections to the Helsing investment. |
| King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard | The band said it had removed its music in July 2025; nearly its entire catalog was described as pulled. | The band promoted a demo collection exclusive to Bandcamp. |
| Xiu Xiu | Announced it had begun removing its catalog and warned that procedural complications would make the process take longer than hoped. | Founder Jamie Stewart described the choice as both ethical and financially consequential. |
These examples come from Billboard Canada’s July 2025 report and The FADER’s interview with Xiu Xiu. They do not establish a complete roster or show that every named artist finished removing every recording.
Why are artists leaving Spotify?
Objections to the reported Helsing investment
Several artists objected to Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek’s reported investment in Helsing, which the coverage describes as a military AI and drone technology company. Deerhoof put its objection starkly: “We don’t want our music killing people,” in a social-media statement quoted by Billboard Canada. These are the artists’ moral and causal claims; the reporting does not establish that particular Spotify royalty payments directly funded the investment.

Criticism of streaming economics
Some artists also objected to the economics of streaming. Xiu Xiu had criticized streaming economics before its withdrawal, while Stewart acknowledged that leaving would be a financial hit the band would notice. Deerhoof said touring brought it more income and recognized that other artists might not be able to make the same choice. These are individual accounts, not comparable royalty measurements or evidence that artists generally receive the same amounts.
Individual ethical boundaries
The decisions do not represent one shared position or a call for a collective boycott. Xiu Xiu’s Stewart described the decision as “just essentially for our own sanity” and said the band was not urging peers to follow. The artists’ statements are best understood as their own judgments about where they want their work to appear.

What does a withdrawal mean for listeners?
Catalogs may disappear in stages
An announcement can precede a full removal. Billboard Canada reported label deals and contractual complications affecting the timing for Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu, and similar arrangements may matter in other cases. Check the artist’s own channels and Spotify’s current catalog rather than assuming all releases vanished on the announcement date.
Alternatives depend on the artist
VanGaalen said his discography was available on Bandcamp for free, and King Gizzard promoted a demo collection exclusive to that service. Those examples do not mean every departing artist offers the same catalog, access terms or listening experience elsewhere.

Leaving can reduce access for Spotify-only listeners
King Gizzard frontman Stu Mackenzie described one cost in a 2026 interview: “the hardest part about leaving Spotify is making your music inaccessible to so many people who listen to music only on Spotify.” The quote captures an audience trade-off, not a measured estimate of how many listeners are affected. Mackenzie also said that after the band withdrew, impersonating uploads appeared on its Spotify profile; he reported contacting Spotify and seeing tracks taken down before new ones appeared. That is his account of the band’s experience, not a platform-wide rate or a claim about every artist profile. The Atlantic published the interview in February 2026.
What did Spotify do about artist identity?
In April 2026, Spotify announced “Verified by Spotify,” alongside beta artist-profile details and Artist Profile Protection. Spotify said verification would consider sustained listener activity, compliance with platform policies, signs of a real artist presence on and off Spotify, and human review. The company said more than 99% of artists its listeners actively search for would be verified at launch, representing hundreds of thousands of artists. That is Spotify’s own launch-time coverage claim, not an independent audit or proof that impersonation concerns have been resolved. Spotify’s April 30, 2026 announcement explains the program.

How large is the Spotify exodus?
The available reporting does not provide a comprehensive count of artists who left, a shared denominator for measuring an “exodus,” or a quantified estimate of the effect on Spotify or artist income. The documented cases show that individual artists made withdrawals or announced plans for different reasons; they do not demonstrate a coordinated campaign or a broad, measured industry shift.
