The first coin-operated phonograph was not yet a jukebox in the familiar sense: it offered one cylinder, heard through listening tubes. The machine’s path from that 1889 San Francisco novelty to amplified, multi-record music helps explain both the technology and the name, which is linked to Southern juke joints.
What was the first jukebox?
In 1889, a San Francisco tavern called the Palais Royale introduced an Edison phonograph adapted for coin-operated listening. A patron put in a nickel and listened to a single wax-cylinder selection through tubes. There was no row of records to choose from, and no electrical amplification: it was a pay-to-listen phonograph, best understood as a jukebox predecessor. Smithsonian Magazine recounts that the installation reportedly brought in more than $1,000 in less than six months; that is a reported historical figure, not an independently verified ledger total. Smithsonian Magazine, September/October 2025
The idea quickly belonged to a wider entertainment business. In February 1890, the Automatic Phonograph Exhibition Company formed with a patent on a coin-slot attachment for phonograph exhibitions, according to the Library of Congress history of the North American Phonograph Company. Edison’s works also produced musical cylinders for coin-slot phonographs, as described in the Library’s history of the cylinder phonograph. The 1889 attraction was therefore an early example of recorded music sold as a public experience, not simply an isolated invention.
Why is it called a jukebox?
The name is associated with the juke joints—venues for music, dancing and socializing, especially in the American South. The National Park Service explains that “juke” or “joog” is a Gullah word meaning “disorderly” or “rowdy,” and connects the term to juke joints. Smithsonian likewise links the nickname to African American juke joints in the South, dating its use to the 1930s. These accounts explain the cultural association behind the name; they do not establish every step of its linguistic history as a definitive etymology. How did the machine become a jukebox?
The decisive shift was from one paid listening experience to a machine that could play multiple records, let patrons choose, and fill a room with sound. Smithsonian dates the introduction of an amplified, multi-record coin phonograph by the Automatic Musical Instrument Company to 1927. That combination is much closer to what people picture as a jukebox: selectable songs, records rather than a single cylinder, and amplified playback suited to a shared venue.

Jukeboxes made it possible for people in bars, cafés and other public spaces to choose recorded music without buying a record. Their value was social as well as mechanical: one person’s selection became part of the room’s shared soundtrack. Operators could use selection meters to see which songs local patrons played most, giving them information about regional tastes. Smithsonian describes how that feedback connected venues and operators with record labels, which released music aimed at barrooms and cafés.
