Jar Jar Binks survives the prequel-era events, serves Naboo in the Senate, and unknowingly helps Palpatine gain emergency powers. Years later, Chuck Wendig’s canon novel Aftermath: Empire’s End depicts him performing on the streets of Theed, where children enjoy his antics and adults blame him for helping the Empire rise. The story does not explain the years between those events, and the “Darth Jar Jar” theory has never been confirmed as canon.
How Jar Jar went from Gungan exile to public servant
He helps bridge Naboo’s divided peoples
Jar Jar begins as an outcast, exiled from Otoh Gunga because of his clumsiness. During the Trade Federation invasion, he meets Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi and helps them reach the Gungans. At Padmé Amidala’s request, he then helps establish contact between the Gungans and Naboo’s human population. The official Star Wars Databank biography describes him as a key link between the two groups.
He earns a place in Gungan society
Jar Jar is made a general in the Gungan Grand Army during the fight against the Trade Federation. After the victory, he rises in Gungan society rather than returning to exile.
Why Jar Jar’s Senate decision matters
Jar Jar later becomes a senior representative for Naboo. When Padmé is away, he proposes granting Supreme Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers to address the Separatist crisis. The Databank says Jar Jar means well, but his motion helps Palpatine amass power, with profound consequences for the Republic. It is this political misjudgment—not a secret allegiance established by canon—that explains why people later resent him.

What Jar Jar does during The Clone Wars
Jar Jar remains involved in public affairs and assists Padmé with political matters. The Databank notes that he is drawn into events on Rodia, Mon Cala, Naboo, and Bardotta. Among those adventures, he helps secure Gungan aid for Mon Cala, saves Padmé from drowning there, and helps Mace Windu foil a plot on Bardotta.
Jar Jar after Padmé’s death
After Padmé dies, Jar Jar joins her funeral procession on Naboo. This is the last event in the Databank’s chronological summary of his story, not an account of his death or proof that he disappears permanently.

What happens to Jar Jar after Return of the Jedi?
Chuck Wendig’s 2017 novel Aftermath: Empire’s End, part of a story set after Return of the Jedi, offers a later glimpse of Jar Jar on Naboo. A refugee encounters him performing on the streets of Theed. In the scene as described by GameSpot’s report on the novel, children enjoy his performance while adults scorn him for his role in the Empire’s rise. StarWars.com’s interview with Wendig places the novel in the post-Return of the Jedi Aftermath story.
That scene establishes a later fate, but it does not provide a continuous biography. The sources cited here do not account for Jar Jar’s intervening years or establish a specific second exile, detailed career under the Empire, or death.

Was Jar Jar secretly a Sith?
No canon confirmation in these sources makes Jar Jar a Sith or says he deliberately helped Palpatine. “Darth Jar Jar” is a fan theory, not an official revelation. The Databank instead characterizes Jar Jar as well-meaning and gullible, describing his emergency-powers proposal as a decision exploited by more calculating political actors.

In a 2024 StarWars.com interview, Ahmed Best described Jar Jar’s confidence and personality: “He’s very much himself and is not intimidated by anyone, except for Boss Nass.” That perspective helps distinguish the character’s open, well-meaning nature from the much darker consequences of his political mistake.
