Spoilers for the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Director Matt Shakman confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. was inside Doctor Doom’s suit. The scene identifies Doom by his mask and green cloak, but does not show his face or explain why he is near Franklin Richards.
Who is in Doctor Doom’s suit?
Robert Downey Jr. is the performer in the Doom suit, according to director Matt Shakman. In a Phase Hero podcast conversation, Shakman answered “Yes, yes” when asked whether Downey was in the costume, as reported by GamesRadar.
That confirms who wore the costume, not a facial reveal. Doom’s face remains hidden in the scene; his mask and green cloak identify the figure.
What happens in the mid-credits scene?
The sequence takes place four years after the Fantastic Four’s confrontation with Galactus. Sue Storm is reading to her son Franklin, steps away to get another book, then senses something is wrong. She returns to find a cloaked, masked figure beside the child. The Los Angeles Times identifies the figure as Doctor Doom and notes that the scene does not reveal his precise interest in Franklin.

What the scene confirms—and what it leaves open
Confirmed
- The figure near Franklin is Doctor Doom.
- Downey Jr. wore the Doom suit, as Shakman confirmed.
- The scene is set four years after the Galactus confrontation.
- Franklin is present when Sue finds Doom.
Not established
- Doom’s motive for appearing at Franklin’s home.
- Whether Doom intends to take Franklin.
- The exact connection between this moment and a later crossover.
The Los Angeles Times discusses Franklin’s powers as a possible reason a supervillain might be interested in him and raises multiverse implications, but these are possibilities, not answers supplied by the scene. The article also places First Steps on Earth-828, apart from Earth-616, and notes the Fantastic Four’s ship appearing in Earth-616 in the Thunderbolts* credits scene. That context does not establish Doom’s plan.
