The Confusing History of WWE’s Sin Cara Character, Explained

WWE’s two Sin Caras were tied to different Mistico histories. Learn who wore blue and gold, who challenged him in black and silver, and what the match did—and did not—settle.

There were two different performers behind WWE’s 2011 Sin Cara rivalry—and two intertwined name histories. The blue-and-gold Sin Cara was the wrestler WWE described as CMLL’s later Mistico; the black-and-silver challenger was the original Mistico from Juarez. WWE’s match settled the rivalry on screen, not the real-world history of who had used the Mistico name.

Why were there two Sin Caras in WWE?

WWE presented the conflict as a contest between its blue-and-gold Sin Cara and a black-and-silver counterpart. The black-and-silver wrestler accused the other man of taking the Mistico identity and challenged him for the Sin Cara name. That was the television storyline; behind it were two performers whose careers had both been associated with the name Mistico.

In WWE’s October 4, 2011 interview, the company identified the blue-and-gold wrestler as the “second Mistico,” who had become CMLL’s Mistico before joining WWE. It identified the black-and-silver wrestler as the original Mistico, who had later wrestled for AAA and in the United States. The interview offers both performers’ perspectives, but it is WWE’s contemporaneous account—not an independent ruling on naming or intellectual-property rights. WWE’s interview, “Who deserves to be called Sin Cara?”

Was Sin Cara originally Mistico?

The original Mistico’s story, as recounted in WWE’s interview, began in Juarez, Mexico. WWE said he began wrestling under that name in 1999. After he left CMLL, the promotion gave the trademarked Mistico name to another wrestler, who debuted for CMLL in 2004. The original performer said he tried using “Mistico de Juarez” before changing names after pressure on local promoters.

“I was forced to change my name,” the original Mistico said in the interview. That is his account of the change, not a legal finding about who owned or was entitled to use the name. The distinction matters: the original performer’s career history and CMLL’s later use of Mistico are real-world naming history; WWE’s later dispute over the Sin Cara identity was a scripted story.

How the two Mistico histories became a WWE rivalry

Blue-and-gold Sin Cara arrives

The blue-and-gold Sin Cara made his WWE debut on Raw on April 4, 2011, the day after WrestleMania XXVII, according to WWE’s profile and its match coverage. The October interview also refers to the performer’s U.S. debut in March; for his WWE debut, WWE’s profile and recap give the specific date of April 4.

WWE’s profile describes Sin Cara’s high-flying style and notes his later partnership with Kalisto as The Lucha Dragons. That profile is a historical record of the character, not evidence of the performer’s current ring name or employment.

Black-and-silver Sin Cara challenges him

In September 2011, WWE introduced the black-and-silver Sin Cara as the original Mistico. On screen, he said the blue-and-gold wrestler had stolen his identity and sought to take the Sin Cara name. In the 2011 interview, the original Mistico described the rivalry this way: “He took my identity, and now I’m going to take his.” It is an attributed statement from the performer, not an adjudication of the performers’ real-world name claims.

What happened at Hell in a Cell?

WWE’s September 29, 2011 recap says the blue-and-gold Sin Cara defeated the black-and-silver Sin Cara at Hell in a Cell. That is the match result within WWE programming; it did not resolve the separate history of the Mistico name. Read WWE’s match recap.

What happened after the 2011 rivalry?

A December 5, 2013 report by ProWrestling.net reproduced a WWE statement that the original performer remained under contract and that WWE would retain the Sin Cara character. The report also said Hunico had performed the role during the original performer’s absence. This is a snapshot of the situation in 2013; it does not establish either performer’s current ring name, promotion, or employment status. ProWrestling.net’s 2013 report.
