Its first three seasons earned increasingly strong critic scores, the series has received major Emmy recognition, and its central tension—U.S. ambassador Kate Wyler managing international emergencies while navigating her complicated marriage to Hal—gives the show a distinctive engine. That is a reasoned judgment, not a definitive ranking of every Netflix original.
What makes The Diplomat stand out?
Created and showrun by Debora Cahn, The Diplomat is a contemporary political drama led by Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, a U.S. diplomat assigned as ambassador to the United Kingdom, and Rufus Sewell as her husband, Hal. Netflix frames the series around international crises, alliances, public-facing diplomacy, and the Wylers’ strained relationship. Netflix’s series page classifies it as political TV, drama, and thriller.

The premise works because the personal and political plots are not separate tracks. Kate must represent U.S. interests under pressure while Hal—an ambitious, experienced political operator in his own right—complicates both her private life and public role. The first season sends Kate to London after she expected an assignment in Afghanistan, then quickly puts her amid a brewing conflict and delicate alliances. Netflix’s Season 2 renewal announcement described that mix of diplomatic maneuvering and long-term marital strain.
The ensemble also grows beyond the central couple. The principal cast includes David Gyasi, Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Allison Janney, Nana Mensah, Celia Imrie, and Michael McKean. That range gives the series room to move among diplomats, political figures, and the people caught in their decisions.

Do critics and awards support the praise?
They support a favorable case, though neither aggregate scores nor awards can settle whether the series belongs among Netflix’s very best. As checked October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 92% Tomatometer from 130 reviews and a 74% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 ratings. The critic and audience figures show a meaningful difference in reception; they should not be treated as interchangeable measures of quality.

Rotten Tomatoes’ percentages reflect its review aggregation; Metacritic’s scores summarize critic reviews on its own scale. The figures are separate snapshots, checked October 8, 2026, and can change as review pools are updated. Metacritic listed a 77 Metascore based on 60 critic reviews overall.
Awards provide another signal of industry recognition. The Television Academy listed 10 Emmy nominations and one win as of October 8, 2026. Allison Janney won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2026. The show also received a 2026 Outstanding Drama Series nomination, alongside nominations for Russell and Sewell.

These records make the “one of the best” claim credible when it means a notably well-received, award-recognized Netflix drama. They do not establish an exhaustive ranking against every original series on the service. Netflix reported that the show drew 57.48 million viewing hours in its first weekend and entered the Top 10 in 86 countries in 2023, evidence of a strong launch rather than a measure of its current viewership. Netflix’s 2023 announcement reported those figures.
How does the story develop through Season 3?
Season 1 establishes Kate’s London assignment and the pressure of handling an international crisis while her marriage to Hal becomes part of the political equation. Season 2 expands that tension into a domestic conspiracy: Netflix’s recap says Kate discovers that the attack on a British naval ship did not originate with a rival nation and that Vice President Grace Penn was involved. The fallout includes President Rayburn’s death and Penn becoming president. Netflix’s Season 2 ending recap lays out those developments.

Netflix has scheduled Season 4 for October 15, 2026. Its official description places Kate and Hal amid a threatened U.S.–UK peace and a conspiracy involving President Grace Penn and Hal. Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford, who plays Todd Penn, are promoted to series regulars. Because this date is a scheduled release, check Netflix’s listing for any later changes. If you want a political thriller that gives its relationships as much weight as its crises, the first three seasons offer a substantial, connected story rather than a standalone documentary or procedural. Rotten Tomatoes estimated approximately 18 hours to watch Seasons 1–3, a useful guide for planning a catch-up. Its listing showed those three seasons on Netflix at the time checked; availability and catalog details can vary by territory.
