Glover’s activism predates many of his best-known screen roles. In a 2001 interview with YES! Magazine, he discussed the civil-rights, anti-war, and free-speech movements he encountered during his college years and the relationship between activism and acting.
He served as a United Nations Development Programme goodwill ambassador from 1998 to 2004. The Academy of Arts and Sciences says his work focused on poverty, disease, and economic development in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In 2022, he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an honorary Oscar, as reported by the Associated Press.
