What is known about the TikTok examples
Know Your Meme’s July 21, 2025 guide traces early examples to TikTok posts, but “earliest located” is not the same as proof of who coined a term or invented a movement. The examples are best understood as documented appearances rather than definitive origin records.
- Dwerking: Know Your Meme’s entry identifies a May 5, 2025 post by @mojothewzzrd as its earliest located example. The entry describes that post as using Sexyy Red’s “Hoochie Coochie.”
- Pwerking: The guide says it found TikToker @sillyboylilly’s “How’s my pwerk? I’m new” as the earliest pwerking namedrop it located.
- Bwerking: The guide associates an early namedrop with @his_.fav_brunette’s July 15, 2025 post.
The guide links early trend material to a slowed Jersey club sound credited to VIP & archangel, while the dwerking entry documents a separate example with Sexyy Red’s song. The available documentation therefore does not support saying all three labels began with one track.

Why “earliest example” needs a caveat
The dates and creator attributions above are Know Your Meme’s retrospective findings, published in July 2025, based on examples it located. They do not independently establish who first used each word, who originated the choreography, or whether earlier posts existed. TikTok dances have a broader history of credit being inconsistently attached to creators; TIME’s reporting on Jordyn Williams describes that problem in another dance trend, but does not connect those earlier cases directly to these three terms. A 2026 EL PAÍS feature also discussed dwerking as a later social-media phenomenon. That coverage shows continued media attention, not a measured TikTok-wide popularity level. How the terms relate to the older word “twerk”
The TikTok labels are new compared with the much longer written history reported for “twerk.” In a 2015 account of the Oxford English Dictionary’s evidence, Oxford University Press said the OED dated the noun twirk, meaning a twisting or jerking movement, to an 1820 letter. The dance sense was first attested in a 1993 DJ Jubilee song, “Jubilee All.” The OED editors suggested the word may connect “twist” or “twitch” with “jerk,” with the dance usage possibly influenced by “work.” These earlier records concern “twerk,” not the origins of pwerking, bwerking, or dwerking.
