The team chose the worm for its unmistakable connection to Dune and its practical role as the bucket’s opening—not to invite the internet’s later interpretations. Gonzalez said the designers had even avoided showing a full worm because of what it might resemble.
How the sandworm popcorn bucket took shape
The bucket was a licensed promotional collectible for Dune: Part Two, made for AMC. Zinc Group vice president of business development Rod Mason said the company works well ahead of film launches, using licensed intellectual property and materials supplied by the studio. The design then went through internal, Legendary Pictures and AMC reviews before it was finalized.
Gonzalez said the designers considered several recognizable images from the books and films, including the pain box. They returned to the sandworm, settling on a head at the top of the bucket with an opening customers could reach into for popcorn. Turning that idea into a bespoke three-dimensional object required modeling and feasibility work. The team was balancing recognizability, the practical opening and the appeal of a distinctive collectible; the designers did not describe a formal scoring process or user testing. Mason and Gonzalez discussed the design process.
Why the jokes were unexpected
The finished bucket’s sandworm mouth became the focus of suggestive online jokes. But the designers’ account is that this response was not what they had intended. Gonzalez said the team did not initially think about the design in terms of an “ick factor,” while acknowledging that a worm image could prompt that kind of reaction. He also said they had decided against making a full worm because of what it might look like.

Mason said the design “sat in our office for months and no one made a comment.” Gonzalez summed up the unpredictability of the response: “You don’t know what the internet is going to latch on to and how they’re going to latch on to it.” The reported approvals show that several parties reviewed the design; they do not show that anyone anticipated the particular jokes that followed.
The cast and AMC reacted, too
Images of the bucket circulated before the film’s March 1, 2024 theatrical release. In an Entertainment Tonight cast interview published February 7, Florence Pugh joked, “It’s not OK,” Zendaya wondered how practical it was to get popcorn out, and Josh Brolin said he would not put his hand inside. Those were reactions to the object, not evidence of what its designers intended.

AMC chief content officer Elizabeth Frank also said the company had not foreseen the response: “We would have never imagined the Dune thing. We would have never created it knowing it would be celebrated or mocked.” After the bucket became part of the conversation around the film, Frank called the Saturday Night Live spoof “absolutely” a seal of approval.
What the designers’ surprise does—and does not—establish
The bucket was deliberately designed as a recognizable sandworm-mouth container, and it passed through several reviews. That is different from evidence that its creators planned the sexual jokes or engineered a viral response. Gonzalez and Mason described the jokes as unexpected; the available accounts do not establish what individual reviewers privately thought about that possibility.

Director Denis Villeneuve later laughed about the bucket and called its design team “a bit of a genius,” according to ComicBook.com’s report of his comments in a New York Times interview. His reaction adds to the story’s afterlife, but it does not change the designers’ account of how the jokes began.

The cited accounts do not establish whether it is currently available, what it should cost, or whether any particular Amazon listing is authentic. Treat a resale listing as a separate claim to verify rather than assuming it is an active AMC sale.
