Homelander kills Madelyn Stillwell in The Boys Season 1 finale because he discovers she hid the truth about Becca and Ryan. The lie is the immediate betrayal; beneath it is a more personal rupture: Homelander depends on Stillwell’s attention but cannot tolerate her influence over him or her loyalties to her own child. Executive producer Eric Kripke described the act as Homelander “literally” cutting the apron strings.
What did Stillwell hide from Homelander?
Stillwell concealed that Becca was alive and that she and Homelander had a son, Ryan, whom Vought had secretly raised. When Homelander uncovers the truth, he kills Stillwell. Afterward, he brings Butcher to Becca and Ryan, a revelation that reshapes the context of Butcher’s revenge and Homelander’s family history.

Kripke discussed the finale and its twist in a 2019 SYFY Wire interview. His explanation makes the deception the trigger, but not the whole motive.
Why was the lie about Becca and Ryan the breaking point?
Stillwell was not simply a Vought executive keeping a secret from a colleague. Homelander had allowed her to become a source of care and emotional dependence. The revelation showed that she had withheld something profoundly personal while exercising influence over him. Kripke said Stillwell had “lied to him one time too many.”

That distinction matters: the killing is not just retaliation for a hidden fact. The secret exposes the imbalance in their relationship—Stillwell could shape what Homelander knew, while he could not accept that she had control or loyalties beyond him.
How did their mother-like relationship shape the murder?
Kripke said the writers intentionally gave the relationship a disturbing maternal dimension. Homelander was raised in a laboratory without parents, and the writers imagined that he wanted Stillwell to act as a mother. Her attention to her own child made that bond more complicated: Homelander sought her care while resenting that her maternal concern belonged to someone else as well.

- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
This is why their connection is more unsettling than a conventional romance or workplace alliance. Stillwell’s closeness offered Homelander something he lacked, but also gave her emotional leverage. Once he learned about Becca and Ryan, that dependence and her control became impossible for him to bear.
What did Eric Kripke say about Homelander’s motive?
“He could not handle the control that she has over him. He just he couldn’t live with it, and she just lied to him one time too many, and he needed to sort of literally cut the apron strings.”

Kripke’s wording joins the two explanations rather than setting them against each other: Stillwell’s lie is the final betrayal, and killing her is Homelander’s way of severing a bond in which he felt controlled and dependent.

No. The Boys television series adapts Garth Ennis’s comic, but Kripke described the Season 1 finale twist as a development specific to the show and noted that it differs from the comic. The explanation for Stillwell’s death here applies to the television series; it should not be assumed to describe the source material unchanged.
